How to.... record a mix?
How do I record a mix onto my computer?
I have a mac, is there some software I need to get?
Can I use garage band?
What cables do I need and where do I stick them?
I dont know much about audio on computers so advice is much appreciated!
Sorry if this is in the wrong place mods, but I thought about putting this in the mixes section but as its a question about producing a mix, rather than an upload of a mix, this is where the thread should go.

You just need an output from your mixer going to a line in input on your computer. If you don't have one, you can get an adapter to go from RCA to line. You should be able to use GarageBand, but I would recommend Audacity. You can get it free here: http://audacity.sourceforge.net
Once you have everything wired, you just need to configure the software to use the line in as the input source for recording.

Hmmmm.... Do Macs with Line Input actually exist? Been using Macs since day dot and i've never seen one. Most come with a Mic Input, which I've been using forever to get sound into them. Just need an RCA/Phono-to-minijack cable and some sound recording software.relik wrote:what brand/model mixer are you working with anyway? you could probably find a manual for it if you are lost. also make sure you are definitely hooking it up to the line in on your Mac and not the microphone input.

I guess it's the same as a line input, they just always put a little mic icon next to the input. I'm pretty sure most Macs have digital/optical line inputs and most newer ones just have the mics built in and don't have an actual mic input like on PC soundcards (although you could use the line input). I was only stating to not plug into the mic input if there was one as they are typically designed only for low-powered mic signals only.Kenneth Sulu wrote: Hmmmm.... What are these tricks you speak of? I only use it for making mixes and recording shit off the computer. What else do you do with it?conscious_pilot wrote:yeah, audacity is the jam...deffinately. i've been using it for a couple years now, and i still stumble across new tricks for using it. way better than garage band.
Audacity is definately a badboy, nice and simple, the way it should be. Better than Soundforge for me.
Many macs, I think most, actually, only have one audio input. That can be configured for line or mic input by software.relik wrote:I'm pretty sure most Macs have digital/optical line inputs and most newer ones just have the mics built in and don't have an actual mic input like on PC soundcards (although you could use the line input).
