I just managed to save over an existing file in Ableton. Instead of clicking on Save Live Set As I clicked on Save Live Set which overwrote the file!

Any way back from this?

I don't know the answer to this, so I'll just bump this to the top. Try the ableton forums (you'll definitely get a better answer)!

Always number your saves!!!

nope, i did the same thing after bouncing down a part last night, once you save it wipes the undo history. i'm ok cos i have a separate save that isn't too many steps back, glad i got into the habit of doing it.

actually making sure you have numbered saves for each iteration of your track can extend the functionality of live. for example say there was a hat line you wrote in one of the early versions of the track but you changed it since then, now you've got into your 2nd section and actually that hat part is ideal. all you have to is go over to the browser go into the project files where you see each save then click the arrow to expand and drag in whichever part into the workspace. obviously this can be done between tracks too.

Ha! Didn't know this one, I wonder how I've never seen that arrow next to projects.

My method is as follows:
Save as: Liveset-aaaa.als
save as: Liveset-aaab.als.... etc
............................................
save as: Liveset-aaaz.als
save as: Liveset-aaba.als
save as: Liveset-aabb.als
save as: Liveset-aabc.als
etc

This way, your revisions are chronologically ordered by name in Windows Explorer/My Computer.

I realize most people are probably only going to 2 of the four letters. 26^2 = 676 versions using only 2 letters.
26^4 = 456976 versions so going four alpha-digits is definitely overkill. But, its the method I've been using for a long time and I'm too lazy to switch.

i went through a few different systems and one was similar to this, then i ended up simplifying it by just have GEN-x where x is a number increases by one everytime. if i do have to have a parallel branch rather than sequential then add a letter and go from there.

Hey, the reason I went with letters is because of how windows explorer displays files.

If you had revisions 1-100, then number 1,10-19, and 100 would display together (if sorting by name) before 2 was displayed.

is how windows explorer/my comp would show them. Came up with this system while using XP. I just did a little test on Windows 7, and It will display files sequentially by number. So my system is a bit outdated, but I'll be damned if I change it now.

You can name them 01, 02, 03, 04 and so on and it will sort them correctly.

I usually use numbers and notes, but the latter makes me end up with silly long names from time to time.
