How to make ARPS.

Post by Lectric » Tue Apr 05, 2011 2:27 am

Alright so this is bugging my balls. I hear the arp synth at the intro of the cinema remix by Skrillex (my fav, dont hate). I have no idea how to obtain this sound. I was wondering if you guys knew any techniques or vsts and presets that generate this style of synth. i look at all the sytrus ones but they all sound cheesy as shit.
Heres the song if you guys arent sure what im talking about:

All help is greatly appreciateddd.

ok so if you know the notes you want to hit then you could just play the notes/draw them in and turn the decay down so it doesn't all flow together. There are some vsts and stuff that have arpeggiators built in and you can use those but as to a vst that just arpeggiates I dunno. I know they make them but I have no suggestions sorry..

I kid. Yea like honey-d said, arpeggiators basically just work by splitting up chords and playing each note individually, so you can achieve that by just programming the notes yourself without an actual synth that arpeggiates, if you have C Major, to arpeggiate it all you need to do is play a C note, then an E then a G, then E again. You can do it in different ways if you'd like, like going backwards G,E,C,E, or E,G,E,C - whatever suits the feel of the song really.

That's all pretty long winded so you could make a synth that does it automatically, a lot of synths come with an option to 'arpegiate'. Reason has a really nice arpeggiator. Can't think of any others though, it's not something Id use a lot, so treat this post as a friendly bump for your question.

Yeah to sort of expand on what Kaori was saying about the notes (in case you don't know much about building chords) most chords are based on triads like he said for C major its C, E, G now (bust the piano out) if you count it out thats C, skip D, E, skip F, G. Now if we take that one step further and add another skip to it we get C, E, G, B. This is reffered to as a 7th chord because you're utilizing the 7th note in the scale (the B) and if you skip another you get a 9th chord and so on and so forth.

Kaori mentioned spreading it out and this is very important for getting interesting arpeggios. If you just play C, E, G, E, C its pretty boring and formulaic but you can spread it out and play it in different orders (remember still utilizing those notes in the triad) and play all the way from a sub C to a piercing C 6 octaves higher all by just using the notes in that original C major chord. Now taking that same concept you can apply it to the 7th chords and 9th chords and get reeeally interesting arpeggios that go a lot deeper than the run of the mill sweep stuff.

Anyway if you already understood that level of music theory then you're good to go but if you don't and just wanted to press one button and make sweeping chords than this might help you expand upon it a bit more. Some arpeggios you can just stumble upon and they happen to sound cool, but if you want to really control whats going on you gotta understand that.
