Small value changes on Reason?

Post by blazinaidan » Tue Apr 05, 2011 6:54 am

So I can't tell whether I'm just really ignorant and nub status, or if propellerhead just won't let me make small value changes. So many times I've needed a value between whats the smallest difference in value you can achieve with simple mouse click - drag on Reason's knobs. Is there a way to make small, minute changes to the knobs?

Should be, that's how it is with a lot of things. Maybe you're just not precise with a mouse/need a better mouse?

Yep, shift should work for you, otherwise try to lower the sensitivity of your mouse/controller.

I think in Reason in the preferences you can disable minute adjustments so make sure that's switched on.

Hm. Shift seems to make it a LITTLE more precise, but even when holding down shift AND setting my mouse range sensitivity to "very precise", I can't get the specificity I want. I'm mainly worried about getting precise values of hertz on Thor's filters. Can you all get it down to the exact amount of hertz you want on Thor? Or does everyone who uses reason just have to settle with getting as close as possible?

Bro, looking for any kind of precision out of reason is like *insert ridiculous metaphor*

Just use your ears. If you want precision, use any other daw. And even then, filter cutoffs and slops are notoriously unreliable. I was just demoing three vst filters, and at the same freq, and slope, all three sounded fairly different. If you REALLY want percision, I've seen engineering level vst filters that will give you pure textbook filter cutoff and slope. But why bro, why the need for precision?

Hahahaha, well I mean I'm using my ears for sure, the ear is everything. But I mean I can definitely hear that I'm missing what i want to get between some of the available filter values. You know, it's like tuning a guitar and having such a shitty knob that is kinda sticky from beer and maple syrup and just WON'T get into the right position. But I mean, it's not anything I'm gonna kill myself over that's for sure.

Btw thanks for all the replies folks.

Your filter is stepping. It is good that you can hear that. If you keep up with that, you may start to hear all the other things that tend to make software sometimes less desirable, or at least hear the difference between quality software, and not quality software. I'll let you take a guess at my implications on that one.

Hehehehehe, I feel that. But I love Thor! I love it! I should really just go into more indepth vst hunting. I know Albino is similar but it just doesn't seem for me. Maybe I just don't understand it fully quite yet.

Nothing in thor can't be done with another synth and some fx. But still, thor is the bees knees, with a little scream and rv70000000000 oooohweee.

Scream is so great. Don't really make filth/grimey shit so much anymore but I LOVED (and still love) Scream when I was going for that sound.
