using eq: specifically fruity parametric eq 2 help

Post by oxith_lo » Mon Apr 18, 2011 5:11 am

I'm relatively new to producing, but Ive pretty much gotten a basic grasp for most of the essentials. I've been getting lucky with my mixes, i get em to sound pretty solid, and I know my monitors r accurate. thing is i basically take educated guesses when it comes to be eqing and filtering. I got FL and Im lookin to understand how to really use the eq, which ive been told, and personally think also, that the parametric eq 2 is the better one. Im kind of confused as to how it works exactly. I just been using my ears to get the sounds right/that i want. But i really want to feel more certain of what im doing, so im not second guessing myself etc. I know the concept of eqing and freqs etc, so no real need for that. Some tips/explanations of the eq and also if anyone thinks i should get a different one, preferably cheap or free, let me know. thanks in advance guys

oh and also, this eq tut is fucking top notch and really helped me to get a solid and visual/mental grasp of the whole eq/freq bullshits, hopefully it helps someone else as well.

well if you know about the frequency stuff, that should be all you need to understand eq'ing
...in my opinion

you say you understand frequency, then you should be able to understand what a equalizer is. Now for a helpful hint on EQing, cant really think of any, but always eq out shit you dont want. if its a sound that isnt supposed to have bass in it, even if you cant hear any bass, eq that shit out, low cut things that arent meant to have any bass, same goes for things that are supposed to have bass, have a sub bass boomin? cut out all the high frequencies, may be inaudible, but there are some always there, you can never have to much headroom for other sounds.

I understand all that, what I'm really asking for is how the Frutiy Parametric EQ 2 works. Thats the eq i use and I'm not exactly sure how the graphics correspond to the sound. Some eqs have frequency wave/line that shows the peaks of the sounds freqs and stuff, the parametric doesnt, it just has thicker or thinner bars for the freq levels and I dont know how to accurately and correctly eq according to that. If anyone uses this, which Im sure a lot of people do, just try and explain how to go about using that particular eq, not eqing in general. thanks anyway tho jr and rando.

The graphics show wich freqs are being used. The you just EQ out what you dont want, and maybe boost what you want a little. :W:

the big thick line is where it's peaking

The thicker and thinner bars ARE the peaks of the sounds, and depending on if you have -- | or O selected above the section that says Montior it will either show nothing, input, or output peaks respectively.
