WTF America... wtf...

Post by noam » Mon Apr 18, 2011 3:41 pm

http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/13112819
BBC News wrote:Four years after America's worst ever college shooting, a student group has told Newsbeat they should be allowed their own hidden guns in classrooms.

The organisation, called Students for Concealed Carry on Campus, was set up after 32 staff and students were killed at Virginia Tech, on 16 April 2007.

Twenty-five-year-old David Burnett from Lexington, Kentucky, is the group's president.

He holds a 'concealed carry' permit and keeps a hand-gun hidden beneath his shirt most of the time.

He says it is unfair that most US colleges do not allow permit-carrying gun owners to bring weapons on campus.

'Right to defend'

"We believe that colleges do not have the right to bar law-abiding citizens from carrying concealed weapons for self defence," he told Newsbeat.
A Virginia Tech student kneeling in front of memorial stones Memorial stones for the 32 students and staff killed at Virginia Tech

"Even though we are recognised by the state as having the right to defend ourselves, the college takes that right away."

We met David in a shop called Gun Warehouse near Lexington city centre.

Also in the shop is 28-year-old Kira Goldade, who says she has had to overcome a fear of guns for protection.

"I have an ex-boyfriend," she explained.

"He has told me on several occasions that he will find me and harm me.

"I can't match his strength physically but I know if I have a gun then at least I have a chance."

Students for Concealed Carry on Campus has members in all 50 US States.

Last year, David says, around 130 colleges took part in a protest week where students wore empty gun-holsters to symbolise the threat they feel.

"The Virginia Tech shooter had nine minutes and 400 bullets," he said.

"If I had been in that classroom that day, the chance of stopping that shooting spree in its tracks would have been higher."

'Lose your mind'

Colin Goddard, also 25, strongly disagrees.

"It's very easy to think that," he said.
Sarah Knapp, Nicole Mottes and Amber Shaffer Nicole Mottes (c) says she'd be more scared if students carried guns legally

"You think you know what you would do. But, honestly, you will lose your mind if you are involved in something like that."

Colin took four bullets from the Virginia Tech shooter back in 2007. "One above my left knee," he explained, "in both my hips, and through my right shoulder."

Of the 17 people in his French class, 10 others died - including the teacher.

Nowadays, Colin works for an organisation called the Brady Campaign, working for tighter and what he describes as 'more sensible' gun-laws.

But he says he still gets where David Burnett and his Concealed Carry group are coming from.

"These people are afraid. I totally understand that. I was there. But their fear is misdirected.

"If that idea (that carrying a gun makes you safer) was true, we'd already be the safest place in the world.

"The US already has 300 million guns in circulation that we know about. How many more hundred million do we need before we become a safer country?"

Not really WTF america as there is both sides of the argument represented in that article.

I'm sure I could find people in England who agree with the right to carry a gun

Its stupid how people are allowed to own weapons that are made for the sole purpose of killing other people. I have nothing against people who own hunting rifles and such but the American laws when it comes to guns is stupid. If they changed the laws on weapons then those students wont have anything to worry about.

probably one of these nuts. the university i go to is filled with stupid rednecks that drive demuffled loud trucks and wear hunting camo, fuck letting them have guns on campus.

You have to understand that our country is in mid-deterioration. Public education has totally failed. The job market has totally failed. What little money families have has gone to the uber-wealthy. Social services / safety net are being either stripped back or cut altogether. We are approaching lawlessness. It is pretty clear that it is every man for himself. And part of that is personal protection.

As you settle in to comfortably look down your nose, I'd like to point out that your nation is scheduled for the same type of destruction. The ground work is being carried out right now.

This is BBC Newsbeat, it's the BBC news service for people who don't "do" news. Instead they do shit reports like this with no substance.

It makes Newsround look high brow.

A small bunch of dickhead american students think they should carry guns in classrooms..... NOT America or any representation of America as a whole. They've basically asked a couple of kids for their opinion, chose the juicy parts and made an article out of it. This is not news, it is not investigative journalism, it's not Gonzo, it's just trite bollox.

Haven't you heard the idiots they get on Newsbeat?

"So Vicky, can you tell BBC Newsbeat what do you think of the situation in Libya."
"It's well badm init, like all those people just can't go out to bars and stuff like us, I think its really sad."

Sorry to burst your bubble but I bet you could do exactly the same report in Britain.

Seriously, the America bashing pisses me off. Especially when you can't even be arsed to find something of actual value to have a go at them about.

A shit worthless trite article does not make good ammo for America bashing.

This, basically. Tabloid scare mongering and 'shock' reporting on the BBC at times is diabolical.

Good points..
Problem is..a vast majority of the population are against gun control..
In the state of Arizona they are currently debating over a proposed law to carry firearms at University.

It's a real problem as this could very well pass.

GB helped create the conditions I am merely pointing out.
nowaysj wrote:Public education has totally failed.
US is what 47 or 48th internationally in math and science education. That is a failure in a nation with our level of resources. When I lived in LA, the drop out rate was 50%. Half of Los Angeles' native population couldn't even graduate from high school. Total failure.

nowaysj wrote:The job market has totally failed.
This one is harder to demonstrate because the official numbers are cooked, but it is apparent when a quarter of the people you know with degrees and experience are unemployed, and have been so for some time.

nowaysj wrote:What little money families have has gone to the uber-wealthy.
From the start of the "financial crisis" to now, average American household wealth has decreased by 25%, while at the same time billionaire level household wealth has increased by 25%.

nowaysj wrote:Social services / safety net are being either stripped back or cut altogether.
How many millions of American's without health care... and we're going to cut medicare, medicade, and social security? Raising the retirement age to 75. I've just got nothing to say on this.

There are people like GB who helped create these conditions, then there are people like you who persistently attempt to deny or remain ignorant. Fuck the both of you.

The less gun control, the more gun violence. It was my college thesis.
