LOEFAH...

Post by johnboy01 » Fri Apr 22, 2011 7:40 am

just wanted to hear other heads' two cents on this guy (based on his older tunes AND his present direction). personally, I always liked his steez and I think his more recent sets are pretty interesting as well.

THOUGHTS? GO!

Just like you. I think Loefah's always been a boss and has always been pushing the sound further in the unknown, may it be with Horror Show or with the new Swamp81 sound.

horror show is fantastic. ok... i guess it's not what you'd wanna play out, perhaps, but if you're geeking out on a big system and the time is right, that tune is perfect.

i think a lot of the sort of tracks he's playing right now sound like minimal house or the first few bars of a florida breaks track (and i love florida breaks)... that sicko cell tune by joy orbison for example... has a real florida spacing to it in my opinion. very sick. i can't say enough about understatement (haha! ironic?) the roughness lies in the subtlety and repetition.

Can't agree more!

I'm relatively new to the genre (about 2 years now) but I keep seeing more and more people my age (+/- 18) blasting some BWAPWAPWAPWAP shit.
I mean I enjoy my fair share of midrange tunes but nothing compares to the vibes you get from listening to these kind of styles.
People say that they lose their mind when they hear some crazy sound Skrillex has created and they just wanna move around and bro-out. I can see that to a certain extent. Sometimes a solid sub bass line and minimal percussion get me in the mood to romp around and bro-out.

Also but I can't help but wonder of the female vocal samples in the video you posted were from a song called "Halcyon On and On" by Orbital. Not sure if this is obvious or not haha but I wouldn't know considering my age.

*Edit*
Apparently Orbital sampled those vocals from the song "It's a Fine Day" by Opus III.
Once again, forgive me for my age haha.

Yes but what I meant is if you put yourself at the time when Horror Show came out, it was something completely new (Mala said it in redbull music academy i think) and it's been like that ever since with Loefah, when he was done with the sinister bassy ambiance, he just turned to something else and there again with Swamp81 he's pushing the boundaries. I don't know what dubstep would be like without him, but I assume there would be something less.

roger that. well put.

If there was ever a guy (DJ/producer) who could get me to step out of my current comfort zone, it would be Loefah. I like the way he's been on the outskirts of DMZ but also part of it, you know? Because I've enjoyed so many of his productions, im willing to give his DJ selections that don't fit my usual style a second look, if you get me. "pushing the sound/boundaries" is a good way of saying it. obviously i don't love EVERYTHING he shares, but the ones i DO like, i never would have come across on my own and they've opened up a whole different wing of the castle that is electronic music.

Loefah has been probably my biggest influence over the past 4 years - starting out with tracks like "Ruffage" and "System" and continuing now with the whole Swamp81 sound which is easily my fave label at the moment... Mans a don, nuff said.

Best thing bout Loefah, he dont rush things, can be like over 6 months before you hear something new from loefah, then when you hear it, its incredible, alot of producers get an ok tune done, out it out, everyone likes it, but it coulda been way better.

Gets around to doing things in his own mystical time!

Bigup Loefah has given me some very helpful production tips, tunes like Ruffage are timeless

At first I really really wasn't into Loefah except for the well known tunes, then I started getting interested because of Quidz (thank you!) which ended up in loving Loefah long time after seeing him play @ DMZ (Amsterdam+birthday) it was like WOW..

Now I'm craving ever since
"If your chest ain't rattlin it ain't happenin'" - DJ Pinch
"Move pples bodies and stimulate their minds"
we just ride the wave
Life sucks; Get used² it.

Pretty much everybody except me seems to be going nuts for the new Swamp 81 sound and this "EPM" nonsense.
Fair play to Loefah and everyone who's connecting so much with the sound, its just not my thing at all.

Wasn't too keen on the direction at first but think it was down to tunes like Goat Stare and well, kinda didn't wanna let go. Feeling it now though, didn't really feel it to much first time I heard him play the houseier, Swamp81 stuff but last time I saw him, he killed the place. It's growing and hes educating. Respect to him.
