Need help with hardware synths and MIDI cables
I just got myself 2 synths but I have very little knowledge about MIDI.
Here's the setup :
MIDI keyboard : Oxygen 61, USB only (no MIDI ports)
Audio interface : MOTU Ultralite, connected to the computer via Firewire, has MIDI In & Out ports
Synth 1 : Virus TI Snow, connected via USB
Synth 2 : DSI Evolver, no USB, has MIDI In, Out & Thru ports
So only the Evolver needs a MIDI connection. Do I just connect the MOTU's MIDI Out to the Evolver's MIDI In ?

Re: Need help with hardware synths and MIDI cables
yep, connect ur pc's MIDI out to the synths MIDI in, and the synths MIDI Out to the Pc's MIDI in. think of it as loop passing info round.
Hope you get working, be cool hear what you think of the Evolver. I picked up Dave Smith Tetra and have to hook a separate midi keyboard into it, phat sound tho

Thanks man! Why do I need to connect the Evolver MIDI out to the PC tho ? I thought the synth was just receiving MIDI "orders" then sending back audio information.
I still have to buy the audio cables and I probably won't have time to do that until next week but sure I'll report asap.

Re: Need help with hardware synths and MIDI cables
you have to use both cables so the computer can know what parameter is controlling
Re: Need help with hardware synths and MIDI cables
You don't explicitly need a cable from the synth out to computer in, but it will be useful. Stupid midi standard, data in one direction only. Midi is dumb as shit and has been a curse on electronic music. Not that it doesn't get the job done, it's just bad! Its like using a rotary phone in the day of android phones... hahaha! Oh well, I've got an 8 midi i/0.

Much more expensive, much harder to find used and no knobs were good enough reasons for me to prefer the mono version.Big Freq wrote:Virus TI Snow and DSI Evolver? you've been saving your pennies...

There's already so much you can do with it and with a bit of resampling polyphony comes for free

Couldn't resist, I finally managed to make time to get those cables saturday so I could play with it during the week-end.ForbiddenFruitRecord wrote:Hope you get working, be cool hear what you think of the Evolver. I've only scratched the surface so far but I love it. Very versatile synth : 70's sort of pads, ambient arps, industrial noises à la NIN, bleeps, fat bass sounds all are things the Evolver is pretty good at and there's probably more about it.
Also, being used to software only I actually enjoy the limited display because it forces me to use my ears and also be more experimental.
Plus, twisting knobs is much more fun than the mouse.
What's your experience with the Tetra ?
