hating on dubstep

hey guys

ive been thinking about this for a while, just kind of pondering this question. have you ever had that friend that hated on dubstep? that was always just like "that shits just a bunch of transformer fucking sounds" and whatnot... did you educate that friend? and how? did you teach him about the variety of dubstep? or did you just say... "that isnt dubstep, this is true dubstep" and show him the good stuff

and furthermore, like ive seen some discussions saying, is the range of sounds throughout dubstep far too diverse not to warrant subgenres? obviously drum and bass has a lot of subgenres, why doesnt dubstep? i myself am not in favor of intensive music classification, but tbh if it keeps people from shitting themselves at all times when a new ajapai song, skrillex song, or pretty much any song from circus records comes out and eveyrone goes "this isnt dubstep! you dont know dubstep! this is just noise!" because i feel like it can all be dubstep, if we just be a little more open with the genres. let me know what you guys think

Almost none of my friends appreciate dubstep music, and I basically let them stay ignorant to it because if they want to be closed-minded about it, I let them. Though now that I've got a somewhat proper mixing setup, I plan to convince them what they've been missing out on as I learn to mix my favorite tunes together. Nothing like proper mixing to bring a great genre to light.

And about the subgenre thing, there are obviously tons of subgenres within dubstep that mostly go unnamed, I believe. I mean really, just think of all of the different influences you hear when you listen to the broad spectrum of dubstep. Although influences don't necessarily warrant the 'subgenre' tag, I believe that as more and more similar tunes are produced, it becomes that much closer to forming a new 'subgenre' (as much as I hate labeling the sounds, it does make it easier to describe to the ignorant).

i agree with you, any time you listen to dubstep you can easily hear and draw connections with the influence and similar styles of other tunes. but what im saying is also, i think theres been a problem that people are trying to squeeze such a diverse spectrum under one tiny 'label' as it were, and therefore, if there were subgenres people would be less elitist, and less choosy about what they consider "real dubstep" because they could just consider it a different genre. do you know what i mean?

I've had many a friend who hated dubstep and who now listens to it (complete wankjobs jumping on every bandwagon, although some of them genuinly like it) but at first they were like what's that strange noise coming from your headset and laughing about it and saying it sucked and then some started to like it, but they were like nooo we hate dubstep it sucks and now after 2 years only one of them still hates dubstep

I didn't educate them, they have to see for themselves, when they gave me a tune I gave them a list of tunes they all go apeshit for datsik etc but idgaf, it's what they like so good for them -hypocrite bastards, I do hate hypocrites xD-

btw; subgenres are so unnecessary and just ruin a lot, it's all music (with lot's and lot's of that lovely subb bassss )

DOnt get me wrong, i love filth. Have, well, longer then most people jumping on that bandwagon... never claimed to not like dirty sounds... but never thought they really resembled dubstep either...

im not arguing whether its needed or not, simply pointing at the fact that for the most part, its happened. Sub-genres are important in ever genre of music. It shows the evolution of sound and production over time, and without sub-genres where would diversity in music be? Many genres started off as sub-genres, so imho, the more sub-genres the better. However, this does not mean I enjoy all sub-genres. ('brostep' for example.)

That's because the quality in Dubstep as a whole dropped off very steeply over the last few years. There are still halfway decent Dubstep tracks being made, but they are all pale imitations of better tracks that have already been made.

I've never understood why people follow a genre rather than following good music, actually I do understand, it's so people can feel safe in their bubble and feel the camaraderie and friendship that comes with being in a scene. All this should come secondary to the actual music IMO
