Re: Map midi controllers in ableton live 8?
if you don't have a midi controller, you can't map parameters to midi. and when he says it makes it sound better, he just means it will make the sound less plain - as it will now change over time.
however, with ableton, right click the top of Simpler - then click group instrument. from here you should see 8 dials now in the same window as simpler (if not, the little round buttons to the left will expand the window). now, you can map the parameters that are shown in the tutorial to the dials in the grouped simpler instrument, this is done by click 'Map Mode' at the top of the group, then clicking the parameter in simpler you wish to assign, followed by clicking the dial in the group which you would like to assign that parameter to (instead of turning the dial by hand, you will have to draw the movement into ableton's evelopes of the midi clip you wish to automate (by clicking the little 'e' button on the bottom of ableton, after you have selected a midi clip).
Now, you can save this as a group in ableton, and if you buy a midi controller you can map the dials in ableton to dials or wheels on your midi controller. I'm sure this is confusing if you've never done it, so feel free to ask about anything you need cleared up.
