Rusko 4/29 Philly - NOT ON FIRE

Post by cbones » Sat Apr 30, 2011 5:51 pm

I felt the need to repost my review of this show from another forum...

4/29 - Rusko @ EFactory feat. Doorly, Justin Paul, and Beem & Deem

I got there late and missed Justin Paul and Beem & Deem which were the best sets of the night. I know this because even on their worst nights there is no way that they could be worse than what was to come. I should preface this with the fact that my ticket cost $0. Also, this was not "sold out" as you could still buy cash tickets at the door no problem. So Doorly comes on and dude is one of the worst hacks I have ever seen. He is at least attempting to mix (which meant him scratching a cd/vinyl back and forth over the other track). He also had some drum machine which he lifted up to show the crowd. Then he pressed two buttons on it repeatedly. His sample was his own voice I think, which kept saying, "Does anybody in here like dubstep? Does anybody in here like Doorly?" - No. He quickly moved into Lil Wayne, Dr Dre, and then capped it off with Prodigy "Breathe" for about 45 secs to 1 min. He at least acknowledged that the opening acts showed him up. He said this happens at every tour stop. Gee, I wonder why.

Next was RUSKO. This was the most grotesque display of narcissism I have ever seen, What a fucking joke. His stage set up was him on an elevated platform with his name lit up in gold behind him. Ok, so I guess we're just going to look at him freak out the entire time. And freak out he did. Big time! Dude was like a chatched up chipmunk onstage jumping up and down like a fool and yelling unintelligible British gibberish into the mic every 45 seconds. He was his own hype man! Ugh....
This is not dubstep. I don't know what the fuck this is, but I do know that anybody who worked with this guy in the past has got to be absolutely disgusted with what has become of him. He is a great producer but an absolutely terrible dj/live performer. Somewhere, Caspa is pissed. Rusko went to LA and now he sucks. Terrible style too. Straight eurotrash mullet and wearing jorts (tight almost capri style jean shorts). The whole thing was really comical. Kids were so into it and losing their shit, Granted 90% of the people there were on drugs (fake?) and under age 22. We left at 12:30 as this "performance" was literally turning my stomach. I went back to my apartment and took a shit to rid myself of that horrifying experience. Then I went back out.

In summation: I am glad I went to witness this as I have followed the evolution of dubstep for the past 4-5 years. Last night was not dubstep. My girlfriend (the best) got free tix and it was something to do so there was no loss. But man oh man, this was so weird. What a clown. What a fucking joke. What a bunch of LA coked up bullshit. God bless Joe Nice and fuck you Rusko. Shut the fuck up and let your tunes play. I kept thinking to myself, this guy is exactly my age, would I ever get onstage and act like this? No! I know he's getting paid and all but Jesus fucking Christ tone it down, bro. Next time Rusko comes to town I am buying 10 tickets for resale and bringing a whole shitload of Tylenol to the lot since all these fans seemed to be so happy about getting bunked.

That was a hilarious review but I'd agree with you.

It seems Rusko is only on fire at the worst possible times!

What I can understand about Rusko, Skream and Benga any others who have moved towards the more mainstream side of things is that it must feel absolutely amazing having a crowd love what your doing like that. Yes everyone appreciates youngsta etc when they go see him but you would get a different kind of energy off the dancefloor in comparison to a Rusko night.
Deeper artists get the head nod of a job well done whereas Rusko et al get the screaming fans going mental for him/her
