Recommend me a decent small venue in London

Post by promo » Wed May 25, 2011 2:36 pm

I'm thinking about running my night again and I'm looking for a decent small venue in East London to do it. Not interested in the big venues such as Cable, Corsica etc as they charge silly money. Looking for something where hire is preferably free as my night is free. Use to run it at Gramaphone and may consider doing it there again but just wondered what else there is out there. I particularly like Passing Clouds - the sound there is absolutely sick! Thoughts welcome. Cheers guys. ;-)

The Bunker in Deptford.....might be a bit too south for you and you'd probs need your own rig. But drinks are dirt cheap and the venue is pretty cool for around 200 people.

Need something similar in SW too, pref. that doesn't include the word "Clapham" in it's address

Had hassle running a night before my last one where there was no sound system or more specifically a dodgy sound system and poor equipment lol. Definitely not worth the hassle! IMO if a venue wants nights run at it then the least they can provide is the basics plus decent space behind the booth. My experience of venues is that they don't really give a fuck and ensuring the space behind the booth is well organised and spacious for modern performance is often an after thought.

Yeah defo agree with that. Sometimes you do have to compromise tho, but the system in there is pretty weak and the set-up not the best but the venue is really cool and cheap drinks.

One of the worst venues I played at was Last Days of Decadance although the sound was reasonable enough there but not as good as other venues. I think they've changed their name to The Shoreditch now. Anyways there was absolutely no room behind the booth for anything like a laptop and controller - very crampt lol!

Gramaphone in my experience is the best for space but the sound has been changed and isn't as punchy as before. :-( Rhythm Factory is pretty decent space wise too as you're basically on a big stage so no issues there!!

Bacchus in kingston. wicked little basement club, fairly good system, very dark, black painted brick walls, not much lighting, perfect for dubstep really. give me a shout if your interested, ill put in a word.

Yeah never been there but a few mates play there on the regs. Sounds like a good night usually, and with the uni it gets quite busy mid-week too.

Nah Mass is too big. And they charge like £400 odd I think for hire. That gives a promoter a wack of money to cover straight off the bat - sod that lol.

The name of my night is Woofer Attack! It was/is a free night. I was lucky to have some very nice names play at it such as Mosca, Fused Forces, Whistla, Subeena, T_!, Crises, Underground Ice, GadManDubs, Double O, Mantra and of course myself The Bro.

OMG you're joking! I was there a few months back for the MindStep party. Wow that's very sad 'cause its a nice venue and easily the place I've frequented the most. Very very sad news.

Yeah came across The Nest recently as a potential venue and it seems like they got a good thing going so might check em out. Ideally I'd like to run it at Passing Clouds as they easily have the best system I've heard in a small club!!

I went to LDOD recently (January) - One of the worst clubs ive been to. Drink were like £9 a single! and sound system was poor, very poor. Utter crap.

What is stopping you renting in a soundsystem and equipment? I was under the impression most professional promoters do that anyway?
