SUNN O)))

Post by hendramarshall » Mon May 30, 2011 5:25 pm

so... uh... yea i ran across this on the youtube. shit is crazy but i dont really get it. what is its purpose? its so... uh... out there... i guess. i dunno im kinda stumped by it. just seems like noise. any ninjas care to enlighten me? is there some sort of drug use associated with this? i just feel like if i was on a lot of acid i could easily be captivated by this/lose track of time

is just some sort of sonic experiment? i saw in another vid they have songs over 100 minutes in length :o

also the cloaks are weird, almost religious...

You know, a lot of people think that dubstep sounds boring and repetitive... music is subjective.

I don't really like SUNN O))), but I love Boris, some of there stuff is kinda similar.

Sounds like what you do when you pretend to be able to play a guitar.

Basically seeing them live is the ultimate thing that will make you get it. It's fucking awesome.

Otherwise get an album by them and listen to it really fucking loudly (books fell of the shelf last time I listened to their black album)

watching them play on youtube is kind of boring as fuck and will result in you missing the point (like listening to Loefah through laptop speakers would)

right, i hear that. this was kinda the way dubstep was for me... until i could FEEL the weight of the bass, the pressure, i didnt really get it. will give this a few more listens with some proper speakers and see if anything clicks :W:

saw a video of the singer throat singing which was pretty cool, i know (well i've heard) how difficult that is.

Well, yeah it's the same as dubstepe in a way. Gotta have it so loud you can soak up the sound and feel the bass rattle through you

It says on the cds "Maximum volume yields maximum results" in fact. haha

From beginning to end, listen to it. <.<

It's all about the sub and repetition and the distortion. It either works for you or it doesn't, I suppose.

nono man, wasnt trying to have a go at them... genuinely intrigued by this because of the element in it that evades me at this point (if that makes any sense). im sure they are incredibly talented musicians.

its like 2 am here so im gonna give this a better listen tomoro when my parents are not asleep on the floor beneath me :6:

That's cool that you're genuinely curious about them. There's a video on youtube of Sunn0))) tunes sped up and it sounds like classic Sabbath riffs. They're definitely not just hitting some chords, basically.

Everything said so far is pretty much correct, but I do think they're overrated. Far too many people seem to worship at the Altar of Sunn, even live it gets boring after a while.

Fucked off after about half hour at Roadburn, needed rest before Scorn :h:

The best Sunn album is Earth2

loads of hipsters love Sunn, pointy shoes and that
what is of value and wisdom for one man seems nonsense to another.

Sunn isn't my favorite band but they're okay. I like Earth more.

"It Took The Night To Believe" or "CandleGoat" are the ones for me.

Worth checking out Boris (as mentioned above). "Farewell" on the album "Pink" kills it, quite shoegazer-y compared to the rest of their stuff.

Sleep are also worth checking out, especially Dopesmoker, if you've got an hour or so to listen to one track.

Yeah, it's awesome. Reminds me of my best friend and his summer place.

nowhere near the best Drone music by a long shot but their live show is pretty great. it can be sinister as hell and its LOUD))).

a lot of folk love noise, ambient, drone, expermental, minimal electronic/microsound, sound art etc. it doesn't have to be a (by western standards) rhythmically cohesive slice of "my mum can understand this" music in order for it to be great. most of my favourite music makes fuck all sense on paper.

Just going to leave this here though.
