I got a mastering question for youz. what are common techniques used in mastering to perfect the audio? I'm not talking about limiters, reverb, general eq and whatnot. I'm talking the behind the scenes work to get rid of problems.
...in my opinion

actually i have a question for you: i hear a lot about keeping headroom in a mix, and a lot of people recommend having your mix peak at -10db before you send it off to be mastered. is this how you prefer it to be?

also whats the best bit depth to sent the file in? i watched a steinberg vid where they recommend 32bit float, as it has way more headroom, whats your thoughts on this? from what i've read its best to keep it at 44.1khz throught the entire production process, and not to dither it, is this correct?

Cheers!

Dear VirtualMark,

I recommend having at least between 3-6 dbs of headroom. From my experience having 2 much and then boosting it to commercial loudness might introduce unwanted noises.
And there are cases when I get clipping wavs, mostly from Ableton producers, they tend to mix in red:) But I patiently teach them every time :u:

Bit depth should be at least 24 bits, 32bit floating is even better but not necessary. I keep my productions at 44.1khz 24 bit. this is optimal for the dance music IMHO.

Dithering is applied as a final stage of mastering process once going to 16bit wavs. So no need for that on your end:)

I hope I answered your questions mate.

Brett promised to send me the mix without limiter on master channel and with some headroom, but I never got it.

Brett, are you still planning to give it a try? ;-)
