Using Kaoss kP3 with Ableton

Post by sweetjames » Thu Jun 09, 2011 10:18 pm

I recently acquired the KP3 for cheap but im having some problems using it with ableton live. I want to set it up so I can use it as an external effect on audio . I am currently running ableton live 8 with a saffire 6. I'm not sure if I can use it running MIDI in and out cables from the saffire to the kp3 or if I have to run rca, but the saffire only has rca outputs. How would I and is it even possible with my equipment to use the KP3 as an effect? Im assuming I could use the external audio effect plug in for this purpose but I can't figure out how to route it properly. Any help will be appreciated.

Hmm. The website says it's USB. Download the drivers for it? I've never had one of these but they look nice.

You can buy cables on ebay or local music shops that would allow you to patch the kp3 in to your setup multiple different ways. You will need a stereo feed to KP3 and then a stereo return from the KP3 that you will record to "capture" the sounds being processed by KP3 back into your DAW.

I use few rca to xlr cables that feed from my dj mixer to the house mixer when i play out and have NEVER had a problem with sound quality. Soon i will have a proper dj mixer with xlr outs but this works really well atm.

midi sends and returns will NOT accomplish your goal, it will just allow you to use the x/y pad as a midi controller.

Thats what i figured, that the MIDI cables were doing nothing for my cause. Right now I have rca cables going from the saffire 6 to the kp3 (pic1) then back to the saffire using 1/4" phone(m) to rca cable (pic2 2). I can hear the synth sounds of the kp3 now when i use the touch pad, but i cant get the effects to work. I was trying to use the external audio effect in ableton to accomplish this but I don't understand what im doing wrong. My questions are: Does my hardware look like it is correctly routed? If so, how do I accomplish the routing within ableton to be able to send the audio through the kp3 add effects and then record back into ableton? Or any clue as to why only the drum and synth samples work and not the effects.

you need to send sound from ableton to the kp3.

Create an audio track and put a sample in and get it looping around. Under the audio to: section (by the volume fader) select ext out, instead of master and then select the rca outs as the option in the second box. NOw your kp3 should be getting the sample played through it.
