I like your bass, your song structure nice, your intro needs more fills (fills and FX soundbanks are awesome for this so you can just swapo them in and out until you find a sweep or FX you like). Your drop needs mroe impact, adding the fills and having a slight gap between your intro/section will likely create the build up impact you need by itself.
You HiHats/snare need a bit more grit, your bassline says dirty but your percusions say ambient/atmospheric.
Depending which software you use I can give some nice easy pointers if you want, lol just so im not that guy that goes around pointing out problems like hes hot shit all day.

listening back now what your saying makes a lot of sense. will have a gand at adding in some fills to the intro, and possibly changing the kick build up on the drop so it start at a 1/1 rhythm, rather than a 1/2 rhythm. what kind of techniques would you recommend to add grit/punch to the snare?
im using reaper as a DAW btw.

If you have access to VST's go for Sugarbytes WOW for HH. Or else anything equivalent to "Erosion" in Ableton Live, its basicly a redux that you can notch with an EQ. PLay with the notch and the level of distortion you want.
For your snare, experiment with layering Clap+ Mid snare + Tail snare that will give you the punch you need. And if you are going for heavy and dirty you will get to a point where you bass will drown out your percussion, so you will need to side chain compress your bassline with your snare/kick tracks, that will give you huge impact and allow you to boost the level of both your sounds without them drowning each other out.
Some people on here apparently dont like side chain compression AKA bass ducking, and say its fail, but 40 years of disco and dance music production culture says its standard. If you are going for a more accoustic sound, maybe less, but if you are going for a heavy bass Boom BAP sound its nessesary to get your tracks up to commercial loudness. There are a ton of really good side chaining tuts on youtube.
Also, layer your kicks (multiple kick sounds 2 or 3). work with big reverbs and gate them so you get the the big reverb feel without spilling into your track with a wide lingering kick.
Your build up is good, just start listening to up-sweeps and other type fills(even perc fills) and you will get the idea right away.

ive had a crack at the cymbals and layered both the kick and snare to beef it up a bit, also added in a pad in the intro and added a few subtle effects over the lead.
what are peoples thoughts on it at this stage?
