Okay maybe you should.

I've read the sticky that talks about which programs work fine for learning on and so on and so forth.

I can throw in the 40 bucks for reaper no problem and I have the trial version and I'm going to play with it.

Thing is, I found a super old copy of fruity loops, no really, it's fruity loops 3. Is this too antiquated to bother with at this point or can I still get vst's or a few plugins to learn to wobble etc. Or should I just forfeit this, play with reaper for 30 days and then put in the $40 for it?

Apologies in advance, I did a search and couldn't find anything on FL3 but found all sorts of good stuff on reaper. I'm a TOTAL noob, but have been into electronica (dub, trance, glitch, etc) for ages.

Thanks for any help and sorry if I'm wasting your time, but I promise I searched and read the sticky!

Yeah go for Reaper man. Its more than enough to teach you about music production. FL3 is massively outdated and would probably frustrate you more than it would teach you.

On the note of FL3 vs Reaper.

Now to learn wtf I'm doing. I sense lots of tinkering in my future.

Is reaper the preferred software in the pricerange? Or is there anything else in the price range (such as zynewave podium?) that offers more functionality and such?

FL3 is too old.

Anything before they throoughly fixed the delay compensation...

In Fl 10 it is far easier to get a beat going than reaper. IMO.

Though, I guess I can swing it if need be.

I'd like to stick with what I get as learning new programs takes time and can be frustrating, though I guess most of these are pretty similar. I guess I'll play with reaper for the 30 or so days and see what's up.

I can swing for a full Fl if I absolutely had to, but I'd rather see how things go first before putting down a chunk of money. I do have a bunch of bike stuff from my racing days that I can sell to get some $$$ too.

For £50 your only options really are Reaper and Renoise. There's Buzz too which is free.

What's the recommendation if I'm looking for something with better interface (subjective) and that has less limitations?

I'm guessing reaper works fine but is a little harder to use, yes?

I can play with reaper now and swing for the 'real deal' in time. I think reaper's trial doesn't really expire, but you have to stare at a 'buy me' screen for a little bit each time you launch.

I'd like to throw in for a basic midi drum machine (does that make sense) that does something ala sixtoo here:
Yes I know his setup here probably costs a couple of grand haha.

I know it'll take time to accrue the things I want, but I'm willing to play with things and get stuff as I go and figure out what it is exactly what I need. A drum machine and something with physical knobs for tweaking feel like they're the basic distortion and wah pedals for the guitar world haha.

Firstly that dudes studio cost a lot more than a couple of grand XD secondly I guess Reaper does have one of the less intuitive interfaces but if your asking us DAWs you can afford for £50...basically beggars can't be choosers. FL would probably be the next step up (at just under £200 I think?) and *some* people find it easy to use. Personally I found it the most confusing of the lot but Any other DAW is gonna be nearer £300 if not well over it.

There's Reason of course but I wouldn't recommend Reason without Record.

Sure thing. I think from what everyone is saying, reaper is a good starting point, albeit harder to use than others.

I'll play with it for a while and tinker. I'll see what I can come up with and if I find myself drawn enough to all of this, then I'll see if I should swing for FL. I've found a bunch of sites with video's for using reaper and some that sell a dvd/download for tutorials.

Should be a great starting point. Thanks for all the help y'all.

Buy a midi controller that gets bundled with a Lite version of a DAW. I have copies of cubase CE and Ableton Lite sitting in my drawer because they came with midi hardware i purchased when i started producting seriously a few years ago.
