Sampling DnB

Post by press » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:00 am

so it seems in the world of dubstep production theres no limits but how about blatently sampling dnb ? Like seriously yoinkin a calyx bass sound. Ive wanted to do that in my dnb productions before but obvoisly thats a bit of a no no but how about using that bass sound, i pretty much could never do myself, in some dubstep. Do you think we are free to sample dnb for dubstep/grime ?

DaVinChi sampled one of mampis old beats (cant remember which 1) on a track on his album...... he used the beats and bass..........
to be honest i think its fair game aslong as you dont use the sample in the same context/genre as the original producer.............. You would obveously change the sound to fit in with what you are doing..............
Look at Fresh for instance.. in a number of his recentish DNB tunes he has used a bass sample from Alien Girl..........

i dont beleive fresh has sampled alien girl at all..

i can make that sound in 5 mins!! as alot of others can... also a guy called randy kraft made some exact replicas of ed & opticals basslines.. their presets on the virus rack

i would possibly sample a vocal/ film sample from dnb. but thats about it.. i would also feel slightly guilty for it.. there is nothing quite like the feeling of finding a sick original sample! and also synthesizing a sick sound uve been tryin 2 get for months!!

... yeah and no-one should have ever sampled funk 45s, then where would we be ???

Sample anything and everything I say ... just do you with it, dont sample a Calyx bass sound n do a Clayx tune ...

how is sampling a bass sound any worse than deliberatlly buying the same machine as a producer to mimic their sound ?

I personally only use 2nd, 3rd or 4th generation samples, like a drum from a jungle tune that was nicked offa hiphop record which was sampled from a funk break ... thats a historical sound.

well, actually there is an alien girl preset made for virus, and i've noticed some other virus presets from fresh's older tunes.

in immortal and tomb raider both the bass sounds more like it's coming straight from the synth, and not like sampled from the breakdown of alien girl.

but who cares, those fresh tunes suck anyway.

What Mampi Swift track Davinche sampled, does any of you know? Or the name of the Davinche track?

I think early Mampi tracks (like The 1, ouch) had some of the sickest DB beats I have ever heard, very his own style. Later, sadly, he just became the regular 9 to 5 DB producer.

So right tho Lucky, every bas you need on there but the best bit is just how rich the sounds r, hav eto layer bass afew time with VST to get that same sound as a virus.Plus its 16 tracks with no CPU over head, that alone sold it for me, no more battle with pc performance, freezing channel after channel...

All about the hyperSaws!!!!

i got wat people r sayin about sampling!

i personally beleive that sampling a d+b producers distorted bass, and other bass sounds is a bit stupid!
like u can tell a tech itch track cos of its bass, likewise with dillinja, raiden, etc..... u r kinda stealing sum 1 elses hook. and a thing that makes sum 1's track their own!

espicially as it is so easy to make that kinda bass n e way!
would it not make more sense to make a bass of your own, or sumthin similar??

sampling a 70's funk record is not the same as sampling a 2005 d+b record!!!!

As for the sonic quality of sampled bass......... hmmm!!!! would only sample of a high quality wav.

I think you should only do it if you're going to make a really, really good record out of it.

Making good bass sounds these days isn't that hard. it's the arrangement, mix and edits that are hard.

I've had a Virus 2 for years and I don't think it's that good for bass, but it does make a really good FX box!

the virus is hot shit

but you can get really rich sounds out of vsti's like Z3ta+, Albino, and blue with a nice bit of eqing and recording it and putting it back in a sample you can get some good sounds
