ambience vs. filth

Post by dameonxz » Sat Jun 25, 2011 6:40 pm

Why does there seem to be such a seperation.... like the people who like ambient deep dubstep hate on all the filthy shit with ridiculous wobs. Also, there seems to be a large population on DSF of ambient style producers.

I definitely got into dubstep for the filth, a genre of slow drumbeats and noises would not have gotten me hooked. Ambient dubstep better have a catchy ass melody (95% of it doesn't) if im going to listen. A good ambient song without mad wobz I remember would be "Cockney Violin" off of FabricLive 37. Still enough happening for me to be actively listening and I can't get the melody out of my head. But I never can get into a slow drumbeat with a simple soundscape, compared to the work it took someone like datsik to perfect 7 different sounds to make a coherent wompin bassline.

I like well composed _not boring_ deep dubstep but why is there so much hate? Don't people in the club wanna hear the down and dirty? I know i do and all my friends do as well. I almost feel like giving someone positive feedback on "ambient step" if u will is almost steering them in the wrong direction. All the djs i see play primarily dirty stuff, and the djs are the primary market for tunes and promoting right? this is EDM right?

anyone else get these vibes on DSF?

"Ambient" stuff came first, people hate on filth because it's changed the scene from what it used to be

u r no understandz. it isn't two polar opposites. there is a a fucking spectrum.

and there are plenty of tunes with lots of energy and no wobble...
for instance

and of course

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2ZqZ53gqeI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TpBk3XsFZk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOEV8mIQjgQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNStVlJWy88 (almost forgot that!)
and then like a billion tunes by joker

i guess by "ambient" you meant "provide any sort of atmosphere or mileu" ... sorry but all of the above tunes do that... i just couldn't find any decent tunes that don't

^ i listened to the first 3 of the above songs and they sounded like retarded babies programmed them. Especially the first one the drums and bass are just awful. They all relatively sounded like carnival-step. Plus i don't get the energy you're feeling

I know there is a spectrum but whats the point of this side? Those songs weren't nice to listen to, nothing really cool to analyze in them, I couldn't dance to them, and my gf who loves dubstep would not wanna bone to that.

Sorry guess i just dont get why it gets so much interest on here and soundcloud and shit

I frankly dont get the hate either... Ive been into both sides throughout this really, and Ill keep being into both sides. I got into this shit when Modem dropped on the way out of anti war... mind, was, blown. i cant help but feel like thats missing from most club nights anymore, why Im not big on turning out around here, regardless the party, I know it will be one sided.

A big part of it is because you cant deny some people in the filth scene are marketing the music to all the wrong people through all the wrong outlets. Lets face it. Dubstep doesnt belong on My Super Sweet 16.

And I can understand that...

But this rift... not cool. Killing the vibe dubstep once had, where you could go from blunt ready tunes into absoloute jumpers without a second though... it gets too many good people, and solid producers written off as wannabes or low-brow... It keeps people jaded... draws focus to one side and not the other... bad bad bad...

I love the subgenres though. Brostep... brostep... fuck that word just sounds nifty.

OP, I read your post again and wanna cry a little... No. Its poor DJ's who only play filth. When i got into this shit, filth had a serious impact because when you play nice, heady tunes for 10 minutes and drop a banger it has sooo much more impact then it will after an hour of the same wobble noises. Poor DJ's only playing one side = the problem.

So I had to check out those links to see for myself if this guy knew what he was talking about and literally laughed out loud when I saw it was "Strange Fruit." Don't think I've ever heard a negative response for that one, nor from any Zomby track for that matter. :cornlol: :cornlol: :cornlol:

no seriously not trolling.

Carnival step is that zomby strange fruit song. Not trying to insult your tastes(I guess I am) but you couldn't pay me to listen to that, the sound is like a circus organ with a broke ass kick drum.

Edit: wow people really like that song? Man I take a lot of drugs already but im not on that level that shit is absolutely wack i don't care if its famous or a classic... seriously if i heard that at a club it would be cig break and definitely another drink

I just see tons of boring shit with no feel or energy on the internet with tons of awesome feedback(i personally think most of it sounds shit and I could fall asleep to it), but when you go to the club its all nasty wobbles. When I visited the UK it was all wompage at fabric too. Thats what people seem to wanna hear, but theres tons of haters online. But it makes sense that it was just a changing scene.

I just see this mega inconsistency and things that confuse me anger me

Ah, fuck it, he's not a troll, he's either young, new or angry. I get it. Lots of people need some time to learn the specifics of a particular strain, start the filtering process.

In five years time though, if you do start to open your mind to other flavours of music besides the 'in your face' kind, you'll be kicking yourself for saying that about 'Strange Fruit'. Complex, mathematical, mind-bending stuff.

This is thread is just going to start a genre war and there is enough of those as it is.
Yeah I'd have to agree with you, a lot of the stuff that I see on sound cloud I think is awful there's amazing positive feedback. It's strange, but you have to understand that the whole scene has changed a lot in the last few years and brought a lot of trouble with it. I'm happy that dubstep is gaining popularity because I believe in sharing what I enjoy with others.
However, my roots are hardcore, metal, heavy music. That's why I really like intricate time signatures, heavy dirty bass and fast stuff that gets the adrenaline going.
But everyone has there own roots so they discover music their own way.
Genre's really aren't relevant anymore especially in this 'scene' where it's gaining so much popularity/changing so quickly its hard to categorize it.
I just wish people would stop hating on any category like whether its "ambient or filth" genre's are such fluid terms now a days that it's impossible to hate all of a specific category people should share music here without any inhibitions. :z:

I hate when people say 'You can't dance to it = shit'. Doesn't make any sense (who raves to classical music etc.?)

Troll to troll:

I see your point I suppose, but Fabric is merely one club and, although it is enormous, its entire population of vested kids on the weekends cannot overcompensate for the myriad of other clubs which host spectacular events. That being said, a lot of this anger you're being confronted with comes as a result of the narrow lens which you're perceiving dubstep at large through--taking what few examples you have and making brash judgments on a subject you seem to know little about. As pompende said, it is indeed a vast spectrum and by no means limited to "ambient" or "filth" (though, to the unfamiliar listener, this is clearly the case). By using this binary, you're not only discrediting majority of dubstep artists, but exemplifying in the purest form the mindset which has tainted our dear genre. All we ask is that you give credit where credit is due, and acknowledge the diversity of taste within the massive umbrella term of dubstep.

For someone who came here to ask why there was such a divided attitude, this sure does go right in with that stereotype. :a:
