Good find on this list. I've tried about 1/3rd of these - from the ancient to the new - and with the freeware ones, at least half of 'em, you get what you pay for.

But there's always surprises; I used to use Hammerhead quite a bit back in my lo-tek junglist days and still find myself fuckin' with it from time to time... the sounds are raw, the controls minimal... and sometimes that's a good thing. Still my favorite way to mangle an Amen too.

Been playing with the Dr. Fusion most recently and while I'd like to see more FX capabilities it's still a pretty decent piece of freeware.

And I looooove Microtonic, but of course it ain't free. The sound quality alone makes it worth the purchase, esp. if you can get it discount-bundled with Synplant or one of the other Sonic Charge plugs.

any tips on getting started with the Microtonic alphacat? Using FL and it starts playing as soon as it's loaded whether or not the tune is!

When you start your track it is set to play automatically.
Double click stop.
Drag the midi to your channel.
It should now only play when the midi hits trigger.
