Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
The slider is turning the sounds up / down.
The meter (the thing on the right) is what volume (Db) the sound is peaking at.

Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
ok so i have read u set drums at -9db rite,so i set it so they peak at -9db not so the slider beneath the sound selected is at -9db
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
Bingo, but dont hold those numbers so close to heart, they will be different for every tune!swoggles wrote:ok so i have read u set drums at -9db rite,so i set it so they peak at -9db not so the slider beneath the sound selected is at -9db
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?

ARe you sure things sound 'super quiet'?swoggles wrote:sweet,i got confused and was setting things far to low then, that wood be why it was super quiet, cheers guys
You should mix with your speakers as loud as they go and your DAW's meters as low as you can keep them, comparing your track in terms of clarity and impact, not in terms of actual volume... If you mix with everything as low as possible and then normalize your final, mixed down wav, youll be surprised how 'loud' things will be...
Turn your speakers up, keep your levels low... At the end, normalize the track, and put your speaker how they normally would be when you listen.
See moneyshot thread at the top of the page.
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
im afraid i still get confused with how to do half that stuff,i need to learn more but youtube doesnt always help me, i tend to learn by being shown in front of me whilst i ask loads of annoying and stupid questions! i cant hav music loud though as my parents hate bass lol but same principle with good headphones wood work? and what does normalizing do and how do i do that exactly? is it a fx on the master thing in the mixer? sorry if these questions are stupid but have little understanding of music, getting there slowly though,my tracks have improved from picking bits up off of this forum
cheers so far learning day by day

normalize raises the highest peak in your mixdown to unity gain...swoggles wrote:im afraid i still get confused with how to do half that stuff,i need to learn more but youtube doesnt always help me, i tend to learn by being shown in front of me whilst i ask loads of annoying and stupid questions! i cant hav music loud though as my parents hate bass lol but same principle with good headphones wood work? and what does normalizing do and how do i do that exactly? is it a fx on the master thing in the mixer? sorry if these questions are stupid but have little understanding of music, getting there slowly though,my tracks have improved from picking bits up off of this forum

Same principal applies to whatever you listen on... Turn your speakers/headphones/whatever up, and turn the faders down... in the end, normalize the audio, and turn your speakers/headphones back down to where they normally would be...
Dont depend so much on youtube, try reading that moneyshot thread.
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
ok i understand that, cheers,i have been trying but following all the technicals is slow atm,im picking it up better though

Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
thats brilliant, thanks dude, so im ready to do this normalizing in my track, how do i go about this in fl9??
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
I'd try to get your levels generally set, BEFORE you get to the mixer in FL, then use the channel faders for fine tuning. You can do that with the volume knob on the channel itself in the step sequencer, on the volume knob on the channel settings window, or with a fruity balance as your first fx in the mixer. You don't have to, but I'd suggest it.
I'd also get your kick hitting even lower, around -12db, and set levels according to that reference point. Just a little extra headroom to work with never hurt anybody, in fact, it has helped many people
In terms of normalization, just render out your track to a stereo wav, start a new project, load the wave, right click the waveform in the channel settings, right click edit, hit ctrl - N in Edison, and your waveform is now normalized.

Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
I think it's important to note, especially with this kind of music: when you have multiple kick samples firing at once, TOGETHER they should peak around -12. The math to get there is complicated, but watch your meters and you'll get it easily. Same thing with snares, claps, etc.
Edit: I don't use FL, but I'm looking at the picture you posted. With all kicks playing you should peak around -12 on the stereo meter, the arrow on the right. Keep in mind that meters like this don't register peaks well, however. Question for the FL gurus, is there any kind of text readout for peak levels that could be used for what I'm talking about?

If you aren't proficient with logarithms and such, this will probably make no sense, but here is a fantastic academic link: http://hep.physics.indiana.edu/~rickv/M ... urces.html
If you have a semester to kill, this site is equivalent to the textbook for a course in acoustics I took, week by week.

Weeks 8-10 are of special relevance.

Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
What I've started doing was making sure all my songs peak at around -6 on the master, and I usually have my drums set around -12 or -13, and then go from there. I haven't tried the normalization part yet though, I'mma do it now.
Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
cheers i will read into them sometime
i normalized for the first time today, definately noticed the difference, looked at my old tracks and they were just loud instead of full sounding!! so this is my best attempt so far for mastering and the rest ( http://soundcloud.com/swoggles/spaced ) comments please? where can i improve? in all aspects not neccessarily just mastering
cheers

Re: setting levels on fruity loops?
Also it's important to learn the difference between mixing and mastering. Not the same thing at all.
