Demo Panel - Feedback on May Submissions.

(Only post feedback and thoughts on tracks listed here, do not post your own tracks).

Feedback from Tectonic, Orca and Soul Motive labels:

Zillion
'Make Me Happy'

http://soundcloud.com/zilliondubs/zilli ... -me-happy‬

Rob Pinch
Mix:
Kick could be a bit more defined, snare could do with a slight touch more low mids - overall mix is a touch light in midrange. Vocal samples could come forward in the mix a bit more - poss just come up a bit in volume but would be better if you use compression to bring it out and keep the volume more level. there's a pad that's too quiet in the mix - comes in at 4.40ish for example.
Vibes:
Nice track - has good listening vibes but I can see it could work in a club context also. Prob my favourite of the 5 sent over.

Pete Soul Motive

I thought this was a great track, the vibe was spot on (a few overly tinkly synth notes in places). I thought the percussion could have a bit more progression, you have a great groove, but the beat felt like it could dow with sprucing up in places. The hihats were clear if a bit loud and the snare was a bit hollow, heavy on the high end. Piano, low end growls and synth incidentals sound good. Thought on repeat listening I would definitely loose the tinkly high end synth, it cheapens a strong emotive vibe.

Will Orca

Ok so the mix down sounds great - all elements in the track sit and work well together, so well done. I think the main thing which stands out as a bit lacking is that there isn't a great amount of variation in the drum programming. I think that as a base rhythm it sounds great, but would perhaps benefit from a few incidentals (like extra layers with an fx reverb or delay etc). I think a good example of how to completely nail drums in this style can be heard in Router by Pangaea.
I think if you could get the drums up to have that level of detail and make the mix sound as good as this then theres a good chance it will be picked up for vinyl release.
Best of luck, I think with a few more tunes under your belt so that you can develop your own sound a bit further, sure you'll have interest from some labels for release.

Caerus
'Door'

Rob Pinch
Mix:
Slight bit more top end on kick (not much tho). Big reverbed snare could do with a little compression just to control the level of it a little tighter (also try catching the tail of it with a long attack setting and a release of around 150-200). Most other thigns sound about in proportion.
Vibes:
Has an almost idm/glitch-hop style feel to it making this more of a listening track than club tune. Possibly worth finding a vocalist to work with on this?

Submatiks
'Icarus II'

http://soundcloud.com/submatiks/submatiks-icarus-ii‬

Rob Pinch
Mix:
Drums are loudest elements of the mix - try bringing some of the other elements up a bit (especially the tech-y mid range sounds). Kick is sounding a bit weak - needs a bit of top end definition too. Snare could do with a 'snappy' layer to give a bit more bite but that's an aesthetic thing. Overall mix could be a touch brighter (bar the hats). Poss try sending one or two of the hat sounds to a reverb bus to give the mix a bit more depth. Sounds like the mix is limited - so try making adjustments while the limiter/compressor is still on the master channel.
Vibes:
Nice dark roller with a jungle reference - possibly could do with a few more of the tech-y style elements to fill out the track a bit more - nothing crazy hectic, just to give a bit more movement to the piece.

Pete Soul Motive
I was reluctant at first to submit a track by Submatiks, because I and everyone on the panel has gotten endless emails from submatiks with no personalisation and no forethought gone into the labels you are contacting. It's always going to put a label off when there's 70 other labels in the cc and not many, if any share a particular sound. However activity on the dubs forum and imo a superbly produced track deserves kudos. Rhythm, synth work and vibes to this track were on point, I found the snare a bit tiresome and bland (loads of white noise?), but other than that, I can see this getting played out and eventually signed. Work on building a relationship with one or two labels pushing a sound akin to yours and it will pay dividends imo.

Will Orca
Very well engineered tune, is that a jurassic park sample at the end of every 16 bars or so? Sounds great and think that it's the catchiest part of the tune. I like the melody in the percussion, but think that some variation in this could make the tune a lot stronger. Especially in the second drop, it's a bit disappointing to hear the same melody in the second drop - it's good to give the listener some payback for listening to the whole thing rather than just the same set of samples and rhythms!
Nice to see some people still repping the eyes down vibe in dubstep - keep at it though, i'd definitely say it's one of the hardest styles of music to make well!

PROG3KT~MAYH3M
'The Lurking Void'

Rob Pinch
Mix:
No major comments on the mix. I'm personally not a huge fan of the aggressive mid-range sound so the things I'd change about it you'd most likely want to keep as they are!
Vibes:
Not for me but there's definitely audience for this very dancefloor orientated sound so don't change what you're doing

Will Orca
Loving the 303 acid line, think that's great. I think the intro sounds a little confused though and almost seems to have a mini drop in it, which I personally dont think is necessary.
I think in the intro you've got some great ideas which aren't in the latter stages of the tune which, if you had a straight 16 bar intro into the drop then you could use these ideas later in the tune..
I think the mid-range bass is pretty solid, but that there should be more edits between that and the acid line because I really think that is the element which really makes your tune stand out. There are loads of mid-range rinse out tunes so its very difficult to make these stand out..
I think strip some of the layers out - like the pad which is introduced and the layered break under the drums and focus on making the acid line and mid-range work together.
Overall I'd say that this tune has a lot of promise and think that if you can simplify your tunes a little so that they're not so cluttered, then you'll have a smasher of a tune.

'Jask'

Rob Pinch
Mix:
Pretty much all I can hear is snare and hi hats - they're by far the loudest things in the mix. Kick has very little definition as do a lot of other sounds in here. The intro is very long and sounds like almost nothing happens for ages. Quite a lot of work to do!
Vibes:
Sounds like an early production effort. Stick with it all and keep working - there's a long way to go yet but it's an enjoyable journey if you set the pace right.

Pete Soul Motive
I wasn't into Jask that much, I thought it opened with some real nice atmospherics, but the drum work left me cold, the sounds didn't have character to them. I did however hear Ophelia on your soundcloud which I thought was a great track. The sounds had character and the track had a real drive throughout, I found it really engaging. Interesting sounds and a solid groove.

9009
'Crystal'

Pete Soul Motive
Found the intro a bit of a struggle to get through, the opening sound is quite grating, it has atmosphere, but is just a bit irritating. The rhythms I really enjoyed, really carried the track, well constructed some great edits and layering of breaks. A bit muddy though. A lot of the sounds throughout suffered from a lack of refinement, the main synth, the mixdown on the drums could do with a work over. Despite only having a few elements in the tune, it sounds overloaded because of the mixdown. There's a moment of clarity in the breakdown at 3:43, the drum work is great!

Chromatic
'Ouroboros'

http://soundcloud.com/chromaticnz/ourob ... ginal-mix‬

Pete Soul Motive
Nice groove, the synth apreg that flutters in is a bit bland, not doing a lot to the overall tune. The consistent rhythmic beeping is nice though. When keys come in it sounds very 'dutch flowers' but holds a very LTJ Bukem vibe throughout. I really wasn't sure about the melodic synth/pan flute esque solo in the second half, I can't say it added anything to the tune. The snare with the long reverbed tail was nice, but needed some kind of changes/modulation and keeping the real long washed out sounds for the crescendo of the tune.

Will Orca
Im a massive fan of jungle so feel the pad you got at the start..I dont think the digital fx at 5 seconds work though, dont think they fit the vibe of the tune.
Really like the build up and drop, everything fits nicely together in the mix and the drums have got a nice laid back swagger.
I think the off-beat reggae style chords are a little bit too obvious though, would be great to see a different idea in there, still bringing some more musicality to the tune.
Love the lead you introduce but feel that a bit more work on the actually melody could help make this into a tune which people have to listen to again and again.
As you've taken a lot of influence from jungle, I want to make a direct comparison with the JMJ and Richie Remix of Deep Blue - 'Fantasy No. 2' - hope you think this bares relevance because I think although different genres both tunes share a similar style and palette of sounds. I think both your track and this track have a great build up and when the drop/bass comes in, both bring similar vibes.
When the flute lead is introduced at 4.19 in Fantasy No 2 - I could listen to that melody again and again and think that if you can come up with a slightly stronger melody in your tune, you'll be onto a winner.

A selection of ten tunes of varying skill and user activity get put through. Five of which get sent to the label heads (they don't all receive the same one). I started pestering my friends for feedback so should get a few more as he week goes on. If you can tell me your production name/track I can tell you if it got put through or not.

How about you just list who is receiving feedback so you don't get spammed endlessly?

I find it very useful and helpful to read this feedback, even if it's not about my tracks. Thanks!

This is a good point, I will no longer say who gets feedback or not anymore regardless of being asked, as I cannot guarantee who will get it or not.

Really appreaciate the feedback so thx guys :)

im gonna redo the track and implement the changes u mentioned. Shorter intro, develop the acid lines more into the main track, remove most of the break, will probs just use little stabs of certain bits of it, remove the pad and generally make it shorter and more banging :)

Thx again
