I like the heaviness...I'm a huge fan of heavy tracks, but you gotta mix it properly. This track is coming out SLAMMING, but maybe a little too slamming volume wise. The highs sound kind of shrill and the I think the drums need to punch out more. One thing I like to do is to sidechain my kick to the subbass so the kick comes through really strong. I would sit back, turn everything down, and start from scratch with the mixing. Get the drums punching out first, then start working the subbass in there, and then bring the higher wobbles in after. Make sure you aren't clipping your master fader. btw what DAW are you using?

Yea that first synth is harsh, its been a problem with the RAZOR by NI.
Im using Cubase and Rewiring Reason for my drums and sound FX. he drums still push through but the synths do sound like their clipping, but their not, thats the natural sound outa razor, id like to keep some of that, its a toss up. Good idea about sidechaining. I bought a compressor just for that. Though working it through reason would be tough. I have the open hat going to the same compressor as the kick so that when the kick hits the hats kinda sizzle and get louder after.

Damn how the fuck can I side chain... hmm

Are you talking about sidechaining the whole synth or just the sub, cause thats another problem the RAZOR has 3 knobs to keep the sub, so the side chain kick will lower all my synth sounds.

Maybee I can just spend some time eqing and toning down in the RAZOR

thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In cubase you should be able to put a compressor on the subbass track (just the bass, not the wobbles) and then sidechain it to the kick, so when the kick thumps, it compresses that bass track just a tad to let the lows from the kick punch through. I'm not very familiar with cubase so I don't know exactly how to do it, but I know you can do it. I'm sure theres a tutorial somewhere on the internet, maybe youtube or something.

yea the problem is the kick is in reason, but I can rewire a ghost channel into Cubase for the sidechain. Im pretty sure the side chain grabs everything and not just the sub bass. I could be wrong though. Your right the drums get washed out too quick. That damn Razor, see all the wonderfull problems it brings me? All in all its a killer synth but it get statically quicklly and starts to sound like white noise. I bet thats what your hearing. 380 ocillators of pure noise. Yes the Razor has 380 ocillators, weird.

I'm saying to split up the subbass and the wobbles to two different tracks, so you can sidechain only the subbass. That way it makes it easier to manage all the frequencies of your wobbles etc.

hmm ok, Ill break out adobe audition and use the scientific filter to just target the subs and then make a separate stereo mix of the wobbles. Great Idea. I just have to do it once the songs composed! AHH more production more more more never enough

Or just can just cut the lows on your wobble track and make a new sine bass track with the same notes!

high pass all your verbs, and lower the main synths' verb send quite a bit. Drums sound smashed into the basses. Set your levels before putting any kind of limiting or compression on the stereo bus, and play around with the release of your limiter so your kick and snare can breathe.

thanks its all about making room. That synth is good for covering all frequencies which means it covers your mix! Theres really no verb on the synth except the last one for a special effect. The drums do sound smashed, what Im gonna have to do is when the songs done separate the subs of the synths from the higher frequencies so Ill have 2 different wav files. Then I can sidechain. I dont know how to just side chain the lows now because the lows are coming from the synths!
Thanks for the feedback though I need all the help I can get. Thanks.

I think part of my problem is IM running a multibandcompressor and a limiter on the final mix. It makes things noisy.

Multiband compression and limiting on the stereo bus adds negligible noise when done digitally. What it DOES do, is reduce the dynamic range of audio material. The reason the drums sound smashed is because they are; none of that dynamic range exists anymore. Your synths sound like they were set 6-9 decibels too loud above the drums, which is partially masked by over-compression. Rather than a musical and punchy mix that has had that musicality reduced for the sake of volume, this sounds like a very, very loud mix that has been smashed for even more volume.

Take off the stereo compression and limiting, turn EVERYTHING down by 12 decibels, get faders set for a groovy mix, and THEN do your best to preserve that groove while squeezing it for volume.

Sidechaining your subbass can help an already bangin' mix but would be a drop in the bucket here.

As far as the "covering all frequencies" thing, sort of related to what you're saying about space: no room is left! EQ some frequencies out of the big sounds so you can still have impact in the lesser sounds. Especially the big reeses, should not be so overwhelmingly mid and treble heavy.

Note: this mix needs work. The song is excellent, but with something this busy it has to sound mint or it doesn't transmit at all.

I figured out the whole sidechaining problem, I did it by running a duplicate kick through rewire then adding two busses and sending trebble to one and subd to the other, I used adbAudioware dummy plugin for the ducking. Now the kick comes through. But I must say I still like the harshness of the original.
