I'm looking at buying another turntable. I already have a SL1200MkII which I bought brand new some years ago and it does a sterling job on the stereo. But I want to get back to a bit of DJing and for this I'll need to get some sample mixes done to give as demos to get the gigs so I need to buy another turntable.

I was looking at the Stanton series specifically the ST.150 and the T.120C as they are quite a bit cheaper than the Technics. Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about these turntables? Experiences? Other recommendations?

The new ones are supposed to be alright.
Numark makes a good deck too. The TTXs are tight, with variable torque on the new ones, so you can set em to 1.7cm/kg - same as techs.

Personally I think Stanton make shit turntables.

Im sure the ST150 went for nowt at this music shop sale i was at years ago.
Then again they had loads, same sale only a few months ago. They can never seem to shift em.

They're probably alright, just used to 1200s i guess.

It will be a bit of a ballbreaker mixing on 2 decks i would imagine.
Have to learn how to knock each one or pitch ride differently

hmm thanks for the input. I think I will have to find somewhere I can get my hands-on and see what they are like. The real problem I have is that a 1200 costs me aussie $950 and the Stantons are around aussie $600 to $700. I could buy a reasonable mixer with the difference (I only have a shit old one).

Yeah that was also a concern but I was looking at in a few more month's time buying another one to complement it and putting the 1200 back in the lounge room.

On the other hand I was thinking I could just rip all the vinyl onto mp3 on my Mac and just make my mix demos with Traktor or something. Traktor's nowhere near the cost of the turntable.

thats the standard price or less in melbourne

a second hand one on ebay wud be about $500 id say
porobably cheaper

play it off traktor I figure -- that way I got a greater selection of materials, of my own, and the 320s on the dub forum here, oh yeah plus some other material i bought off warp and boomcat too.

OK, so I gotta ask you why you prefer the Stantons. Is it just for the straight arm? I am not a scratcher, so I wasn't gonna buy the straight arm version.

Man! I would only buy what i'm gonna use in club, that's Technics. There might be other decks that are better, but Technics are the ones. Mixing is not hard, so any other deck that seems to make it slighty easier, is doing you no justice.

That is SPECIFICALLY why you SHOULD want used techs.

If they were all shiney, then you'd know they don't stand up to the test of time.

First, I already know they stand the test of time - if you look after them.

Second, the totally grodey ones haven't withstood the test of time because they haven't been cared for. The only reason they are there is because the hire company or the club owner doesn't care about the equipment.

Lol. werd. I'm not a tech advocate or anything! like I said, I opted to not get them.

I wouldn't recommend TTXs. 1st series were known for some engine overheat and other issues. I bought mines thinking Numark'd fixed it and now I've to get one repaired for the 2nd time.
Plus, after-sales service is terrible: it took 4 months to repair last time

Also if you're a lucky guy and you think yours won't fail, be aware that the pitch is inaccurate. You can only pitch by 0.1% which is just not sufficient to correctly beatmatch all records.

TT500s have same design & caracteristics as TTXs without the useless bluescreen, they're cheaper and they don't fail. Don't know about the pitch.

as long as you're buying in person, go used. i got my 1st 1200 in 94 for $150, and it was already 12 years old by then. haven't had any problems at all-- got it cleaned/recalibrated a few years ago for $100. these things are tanks.

there is always someone going travelling overseas & selling decks for what ever other reasons.

i know loads of second hand bought 1200s that were never used in a club.

sum people just want to get rid, ive seen em go for nowt heaps.

hold out and look for some used I found mine for $200 each and I have had them for over 8 years with no problems

technics. i wouldn;t even consider anything else.... nothing feels the same.
