Quick question on workflows/production
Hey all, I know alot of threads have saved me a few times with questions already been answered. I found one really helpful one. I just need a little help for the next little step.
Im not a producer or anything, I have been making electronic style stuff for a little while with little more than my laptop and a MIDI keyboard. But ive been having some real fun times lately and Im hoping to atleast get the songs, which I have many, to the next step, which would be, to play at friends house parties and say 'yeah i made this, you want to pump me now?'
Im using Live, Massive, I am happy with my tones and 'riffs', drums and stuff. but what gets me, is when i have a Live set full of automated junk, and some basslines that I cant effect as much as I can than if it was a wav file. actually all the layers i guess.
Do you, or is it THE way to do it, bouncing all your 'layers' down an kinda rebuilding them again on a new set. then having a bit more freedom to change tweak certain sections easier. or say for my setup like i said earlier, leave all synths running all times even if im not editing the tone of them. until final bounce? I guess you could bounce down a few different versions of say a bass line in diffferent Eqing, an layer them instead of running 3 synths with the same say preset, just tweaked.
thanks guys, I know its probably simple music knowledge, but im coming from a different background with this, where its all wav files an nothing is automated. I scream into a death metal riff an our albums come out the other side.
Oh, im not gonna ask bout how to make skrillex bass sounds either. Hopefully I get some help, an I may ask one more question... but its not about his sound. cheers again.

Re: Quick question on workflows/production
I just use one project eqing/compressing every channel as I create the track. And only if it's necessary, I'll put it through a mastering stage on a different project.

sorry bud, i wrote that right before heading off to work.jrisreal wrote:!!! WELCOME TO THE FORUM !!!

Was wondering, do any of you guys/girls/producers bounce, say a bassline, to audio after you have automated it and eq'd it, and put it in the place of the midi file of the bassline you had prior to bouncing.
I read a few bits an pieces, that some people do a few variations of the bassline, bounce each one down, then layer them. I was thinking about trying it, but first was just wondering what other peoples thoughts were on this. cheers

Re: Quick question on workflows/production
only times i ever do if i put a shitload of effects on it and those effects are eating my cpu, so usually ill just keep it as midi, its probably a good practice to bounce everything to audio though, i just dont cause i get lazyAndywounds wrote:sorry bud, i wrote that right before heading off to work.jrisreal wrote:!!! Re: Quick question on workflows/production
Yeah, I do this all the time. Layering is key to getting nice modulating basslines.
Re: Quick question on workflows/production
Use the Freeze feature in Ableton. It frees up your CPU, then you can bounce to an audio track. If you need to make changes you can unfreeze and everything is as you left it.
Re: Quick question on workflows/production
I've done that, not something I do often though.Andywounds wrote:sorry bud, i wrote that right before heading off to work.jrisreal wrote:!!! WELCOME TO THE FORUM !!!

Re: Quick question on workflows/production
i guess its just a choice.
but i wouldnt drag the audio bounce back on the plugin channel strip as it would double the effects of whatever processing u have in there...
oh shit...
wait.. i just.. got
wait
idea! shit shit!

thx man.

Depends on the sound I'm trying to get in the tune. Some of my basslines will be bounced audio dropped back in, some will be one shot waves chucked into FPC and jammed out, some will be triggered MIDI off the VST. Honestly, no set pattern.
Re: Quick question on workflows/production
If you make music you are a producer.
Re: Quick question on workflows/production
^nah... not in the industry sense really. uve got to run projects and make visions come alive to be that. uve got to make it happen and be involved at various levels.
that term has been used so loosely ever since producers started being in videos and such.

Re: Quick question on workflows/production
thanks guys, after a few trial and error jobs I found both ways, midi intact or bounced down can be effective in effecting an shit.
also, after reading alot of threads, mostly about synths and automation, ive found by just tweaking, effects ive been wondering about. Ive always just gone 100% either way with a knob (or pussy) and sounded shit. even just the slightest budge an its right how i want it. probably simple stuff to alot of you, but one of those steps I believe onto the way to making a different bassline.
cheers everyone. if you get a sec go listen to some unholy hardcore(as in punk not gabba) an see where im mostly making music wise. www.myspace.com/abraxishc
can I use the word 'blood' yet?

You'll never release a tune, thenbrack3n wrote:I dont like bouncing shit to audio because i always fear ill want to change it after ive done it.

Also, you can always keep the original AND the bounced version.

anyway we just had a similar thread that was pretty interesting: http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=210843
personally, when i'm doing layered synth lines I'll work on a sound until i'm hapy with it, decide whether to record it wet or dry, and bounce it. Then edit the patch, maybe change the octave on an osc, re-route modulators, etc... and just print it again. Then mix the two (three, four) to taste.
