Looking for new speakers. Recommend me some.

Post by GV1 » Mon Aug 01, 2011 8:06 am

Currently I have Rockit 5's but it's time to upgrade and get some better speakers.

I'm looking at a couple at the moment, but looking for recommendations from you guys.

My budget is around £1000 for a pair. I want a pair with a good frequency response and sound quality.

For that sort of price range, I'd recommend;

Mackie HR824 - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/3 ... -pair.html
KRK VXT 8 - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/3 ... -pair.html
JBL LSR4326P - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/1 ... -pair.html

Alternatively, if you can push the budget a bit;

Adam A8X - http://www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/product/5 ... pair-.html

Thanks Wub. Will take a look now. Those Mackie's are the ones I was looking at too.

The Mackie's are the industry standard really for that price innit. I'm guessing you're looking at mid-field and active? I always think you can stretch your money a bit further and it's a hell of a lot easier to have your shit serviced if it's not active (ie: separate amp). I rock the Dynaudio BM15's (passive) with a Samson 550w amp. They sound great. But the active version is a grand a pop, where as the passive is 800ish for the pair.

The genelec 8030A have sounded impressive also when I heard em, but in a smaller space they sound really bassy. Just as an alternative to Wub's selection tho.
I make music as Forsaken, you can DL all my unreleased (and a couple released) bits here.

I see Mackie everywhere, except when the budget is a little tighter in that case it would be KRK.
Only heard good things about Adam too.

I've mixed on loads of speakers, my favorites are ADAM, I know theyre out of your budget but I'm just putting that out there. I was really happy with Yamaha HS80M but they didn;t have the bass response I wanted so I switched to KRK 8's and for the price I"m pretty damn happy. Although I miss the true mid response from the yamaha's (I've been thinking about getting them again as a set of alternate reference monitors). My friend mixes on the Mackies and has turned out some really tight mixes and he's been quite impressed with my KRK's when he's been over here. I'm not a fan of Genelecs and I think dyn audio are horrible, I have mixed on both and been dissapointed with the translation of my mix in other systems.

All of them are good monitors but have different sonic qualities. Go listen to them in a shop and let your ears decide what's best for you.

I could push to the ADAM's. I'm just checking out the reviews.

For that money you can most definitely get a second hand pair of PMCs / Focals
