Resampling help
I'm pretty new to producing, I tried reading the production guide on this forum and I had a hard time following all the terminology because it's about FL studio and I'm using ableton/massive. Anyways, I tried resampling my bass after watching some youtube videos but they always turn out sounding like garbage so I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a good/reasonably easy to follow tutorial for amatuers. Also though I was wondering do N.I. Massive basses even need to be resampled? Some of the basses I make sound pretty big already, but like I said I'm new to this stuff I'm not 100% sure..
Re: Resampling help
i would recommend spending some more time reading the production bible. it is certainly not all FL related. all the info you could ever want is in there.
start with the bass thread:
http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=159658
also, use the DSF google and search "resampling" you will have TONS of threads to read where all of this has already been covered.
if the terminology is a bit advanced for where you are at right now, you are probably going to struggle a bit with any of the advice that we give you or anything you might find... so you may need to do some more youtube tutorial watching to get a stronger grasp on some of the basics. there is tons of stuff on youtube for "dubstep bass tutorial"
also, you might want to look into something like SonicAcademy if you want some Ableton specific, step-by-step instructions.

Re: Resampling help
When youre resampling its wayy better to do a tiny bit of distortion at a time. So instead of having your disto plugin going at 100% wet, lower it down to like fucking 13% and do it again with another program. Same with phasers, chorus, reverb blah blah blah. Youll see man, a lot of a little bit sounds better than a bit of a lot

There needs to be a sticky dispelling the ridiculous myths of resampling.

Re: Resampling help
Honestly, if you're just starting out I wouldn't even bother with resampling at this point. I would just stick to Massive and maybe a couple other synths and just focus on learning how to use them. You can make plenty of badass sounds without resampling.
When you get to the point where you are able to make the sounds you want with your synths, then you can think about resampling to open up some new sound design possibilities and a different workflow.
For anyone new to production I would recommend just learning basic things like drum programming, synthesis, arrangement, and mixing before worrying about more advanced techniques like resampling. I've been at this for like 10 years and I still struggle with the basics at times!

Re: Resampling help
Yeah, just maybe 15 minutes ago I made a crazy patch in Massive. I tried doing some resampling, split the frequencies, added a ton of effects, etc. I thought it sounded great, but then I tried listening to the dry patch right out of Massive and realized it sounded way better then the processed one. Massive already has 4 effects inserts with a ton of choices, so that will process the sound all you need.
Same thing happens to me with drums. Maybe I just suck at Eqing, layering and compression but sometimes my processed kicks/snares sound worse then the ones right out of the pack
