School... for music

Post by R3calCulation » Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:39 am

Ok so I've been thinking about going to school for music production.
Is it worth it? and I would like to hear some recommendations to some schools you my know.

I don't know of any specific schools myself, but of course it is worth it. The things you learn may not be specifically for Dubstep, but your overall production skills will definitely improve which is of course beneficial for whatever genre you're planning on producing. Many of the top producers have studied music production or something similar, and I believe Gatekeeper even teaches it.
You could also always take an online Dubstep production course at Point Blank (http://www.pointblankonline.net/), they seem to be quite good. Don't have any experience with them myself yet but I plan on taking one of their Dubstep courses in the future when I have the time and money.

I'm going to college for International Business Management; I still have a lot to learn, but youtube has a bunch of tutorials for music production. Don't give your money away to those cheap bastards for just music production because that needs influence and taste, not skill. Music is what you feel, not what you learn. Do something big in college like engineering or something and music production on the side, like a hobby.

I am preparing to go into Music Production with Full Sail University. (Winter Park, Florida, United States) It is an online Bachelors degree, but you learn more than just producing and composing music. Marketing, business, audio engineering, movie and game music, etc. are all taught during this course also. In the long run it will likely push you to think outside of the box by doing some of the projects that are assigned, which may include things you wouldn't normally do. It all adds up as experience and will increase your expertise. So if you are in the States this may be a good option as it can be done anywhere. Its worth checking out.

I'm taking the 8 week music production for Ableton course with pointblank online right now, just into the second week. Highly recommend it. I've been teaching myself on and off for the last year or so but even just 2 weeks in I'm still getting a heck of a lot out of the course. Jonny Miller is a mantis. Excellent teacher. Also, I'm doing full-time university study but still find enough time to do the course, doesn't interfere at all. Might take another course or two when I'm done with this.

Hey Guys,

Just came across this thread. It's cool to hear some reccomendations from people and a some feedback, nice one Sinestro. It takes a lot of work to fit in Uni and an online course. Get in touch once you've finished and let us know how it went.

I'm not quite sure what Warefare Dubstep meant in his post, but to address his point: "Don't give your money away to those cheap bastards for just music production because that needs influence and taste, not skill."

Now not to boast, but our tutors do indeed have the holy trinity of infulence, taste and skill. They relay this over to you, indivdually, using our DVR feedback which is a 1-2-1 video of the tutor working on your track and showing you ways to improve your production. This is something that not only can you not recieve from Youtube tutorials, but also from any other Online School out there. I would also contest your point that we are 'cheap bastards'...but that's for another day.

R3calCulation - What kind of course are you looking for? As you have heard, we do style specific courses, such as our Dubstep one, or you can take a broader course that just covers Logic, Ableton or Cubase overall and wont give you as many tips on how to create sounds that are typically used in individual genres. Post up any questions you might have on here and I will get back to you. Or you can get in touch with Luke here at the college, who will have much more detailed information than me - luke@pointblanklondon.com -

Thanks again for the feedback, keep it coming!

Cheers,
James - PB

Rung up Pointblank London about 2 years just to ask about a few courses; ended up having a in depth phone conversation about what I knew already, what I wanna know, what I make, ways to pay, etc, etc.

No college or university has done that; they seem to be really passionate about what they do and my mate did a 3 month logic course with them and praises it highly.

I'm guessing the online courses are well thought out and worth your while.

Then again, I like to keep an open mind and this is all speculation and guess work based on 1 persons testimonial and a 30 minute phone conversation.

I've been thinking of taking a Dubstep course for Ableton on Point Blank sometime soon, but I was wondering, how much of basic skill of Ableton is needed for such a course?
Because I've been working with Reason alot but I felt that it didn't really suit me (I know software doesn't really matter but Reason just didn't work for me), and so far I like Ableton alot better, but still... my knowledge of Ableton is below average.

So does any1 know? I'm just wondering whether they explain everything thoroughly in the course, or if they just say "now do this and that" without explaining how to do it exactly.

If we get enough demand for it. If there are courses you want to see us develop, get in touch and drop us an email to let us know. We have just re-launched two new Cubase courses for general production techniques and understanding the DAW. A beginners course and an advanced course. Take a look and see what you think >>http://www.pointblankonline.net/courses ... ourses.php

Our Ableton and Logic Dubstep courses have only very recently been refurbished and sprused up too. I think it will be interesting to hear the difference between UK and US students' music at the end of this course.

Thanks for the good words legend4ry, we try and keep all those things at the forefront of what we do, and everyone who works here is as passionate about making music as you are, so hopefully that comes across.

Cheers,
James - PB

Point Blank is the shit! Seriously. I've never done any courses, but I really want to. Point Blank and DubSpot have a great reputation and a lot of happy customers -- great niches too. Point Blank's 1-on-1 is a high selling point, DubSpot's guest appearances is a high selling point. Both well trained. If you have the money, consider it. I don't have the money and I still consider it.

Just check their YouTube accounts and watch all their videos, it's a great free taste of what is to come. Good luck :4:
