Help With Complextro For A Beginner

Post by poadude » Wed Aug 24, 2011 11:48 pm

I've been getting really into artists like Dirtyloud, Mord Fustang, and Zomboy (He isn't Complextro though)
I don't want to copy all the great artists out there but the sound I really like and want to include is this song
I've been using ableton for about 6 months and the first two tracks are my attempts at a Complextro bass drop Soundcloud.
Soundcloud
I would obviously add more to the song but I really wanted to get that part down 'cuz I pretty much know how to form a melody etc.

Basically, feedback and advice on expanding this. Also, I'm aware that the sub bass is not good at all.

Tip 1: Don't call it "Complextro".

Seriously, wtf is that?

don't call it that? you are most definitely not in this "electro house complextro production fad" so of course you don't know. it's just some hipster name for a different sound occurring every 2 seconds with a sort of melody in a song. not really complex but just developed that name since naive people who don't produce will be completely astonished by the song. yes, it is a legitimate name and has been for about i think a year or 2? fairly new hipster term.

take a low octave saw type bassline resample it and chop it up then find like 5 random vengeance samples in key of what you are in and throw it in there. take 1 of those samples that sounds like a sort of lead that could be used and just have that repeat and some percussion in the intro. there you go.
also i like that song you put up

I know what it means, it's just the stupidest name. Especially when the genre in question already exists as electro house.

I wasn't asking for your opinion on the legitimacy of the genre or how hipster it is. I was asking on advice and feedback keeping in mind that I'm drawing influence from those artists that I happen to really like. I want to put a lot of effort and time in my songs and i'm not expecting to just make some half-assed song to go show all my hipster friends and astonish people.

Yea I know Electro House is the same thing I just thought that when people hear Complextro they immediately think of Porter Robinson, Mord Fustang, and that genre

an opinion? it's a sub genre esque name. let me rephrase that statement. it's not a hipster term hipster's don't listen to electro and i wasn't even talking to you in the first place don't get butt hurt.

OMG COMPLEXTRO AHAHAHAHAHAHHA

anyways, justice does that all the time...

i trace it back to mr oizo... ive achieved deep sounds like these by resampling and resampling.. and chopping, the depth and rubberiness of the bass comes from multiple distortion units with multiple settings on different parts of the spectrum... its cool

I remember when it was just called electro house or fidget. There's plenty of tutorials for that on YouTube.

If you want to sound like Zomboy, stock up on Vengeance sample packs and Skrillex MP3's.

Look up Madeon. After that, look up Justice. After that, look up Daft Punk.

Basically: funk + electro basslines + house beats + clever chops = electro/fidget house.
Soundcloud
Ableton Live 9, NI Komplete Audio 6, KRK Rokit 5's, Sennheiser 380 HD Pros, Novation Launchpad, and ma Producing Rig.

@OP good job man, all you need is some EQing, Saturation, Stereo width and some panning perhaps?

Panning is a huge part of this. You need to get creative with your panning, or maybe even just go nuts with it and figure out what you like.

Panning = movement
