producers join PRS and get PAID!!
yes y'all
ThinKing has made a very important point about PRS... if you produce beats that are getting played, you will be paid if you are a PRS member...
there's a joining fee and they take a percentage of your money,
but PRS are currently the ONLY insitiution that gathers this money for you..
their payment system is pretty random and slow, but they will gather money for beats that have already been paid once you're a member...
different insitutions pay different rates, Radio1 i think pay about £18 per minute... 1Xtra much less than that tho' .. i'm not sure about stations like Kiss.. but suffice to say that one or two plays on Radio1 would probably cover your joining fee..
it's your money.. get paid!!
read ThinKing's original post here and a link to their site:
the PRS is the Performers' Rights Society, part of the PRS/MCPS Alliance which is an organisation set up to recoup and distribute royalties to writers, performers and publishers of musical recordings.
The PRS specifically collects license fees from venues like pubs & clubs, and also commercial radio/TV stations - they compile lists of all music that is played and distribute the royalties (mostly made up from the license fees) to the artists, usually depending on how much their music has been played and where/when.
You have to be a member of course, otherwise you don't get jack.

I wish the Portuguese system was as fair as the UK one.
Here, our PRS is called SPA and is a "mafia". Just old fat artists receive any money, they don't have a organised system to track down how many times and how often the beats are played...
Most of the persons I know register they own productions in Spain, just to be out of the "mafia" system.
I had a talk with a few artists from UK that played in Portugal and they explained to me that actually PRS works well!

yeah out here it's one big scam aswell. here the scumbags are called SABAM. you have to pay about 500 euro to join, and most of the time you get jack shit in return, because almost all the collected money goes to the big mainstream artists.
so if you have a party with music that's not registered with SABAM (which i think with dubstep definitely is the case), in theory you don't have to pay them...but if they find out, they can extort you, turn the whole place upside down searching for cd-r's and white labels, threatening the promotors and all of that shit. if they find anything illegal
, they can give you a fine that can put you in serious financial trouble. those bastards can do all that without proof, because they never have a list of the artists they represent with them.
stinky business i say (at least in Belgium)

^^^ yech. something's rotten in the state of Belgium.
US Artists: If you're signed up w/ ASCAP or BMI (dunno about SESAC), PRS will reciprocally collect your royalties on your companies behalf. the upside: no joining PRS. the downside: it takes 18months-2years for royalties to be collected. However, since everything in BBC is documented and archived, you can print out a list of your radio play and ideally get paid for every spin.

All the people all I know don't even register to get their tunes copyrighted, but send themeselves an envelope with a copy of the tunes.
Just type "ladrones" (Spanish for thieves) on google. The first result takes you directly to their official site
Is there any correct way to go about things? I'm with ASCAP, and every new beat I write, I register using their online registration form. Does this take care of itself, or do I also have to submit playlists from shows?TeReKeTe wrote: However, since everything in BBC is documented and archived, you can print out a list of your radio play and ideally get paid for every spin.

u can play my songs and we can split it 50/50mary anne hobbs wrote:i'm not sure of the exact process... contact PRS direct and find out first hand..
i can tell you that the BBC log every minute and second of every song ever played..
NB: PRS can be LONG and random in their payments - they don't seem to be done in chronological order either..

I talked to ASCAP today... print 'em out and send 'em in to member services. it *MAY* take care of itself but trusting ascap to get you paid for everything you should be paid for is a sketchy science--even they'll admit that.ASC wrote:Is there any correct way to go about things? I worked @ PRS when I was doing my Music Business degree a couple years ago!! .. Mary Anne is right when she says they are a little slow. The baglog back then was emmense, but like it says, you will get paid in the end, and if you get your dubstep aired on MAH's show a couiple times you will recoup your joining fee.
Personally, I would purchase the MMF Guidebook if your serious about making and marketing your own music to the masses.
The MMF Guide to Professional Music Management, about £35
