Album Writing

Hey you, forum crew!

I'm writing an album, not strictly dubstep, but I want to encompass all styles of music I'm interested in. It's all coming along nicely!
Hope this one is going to get me places outside of the dubstep realm, which in my opinion is being suffocated by bro's and its hoes.
The album is mixed styles, I'm trying to do what the chemical brothers did in their first few albums and buck the trends and make something memorable and interesting. Not on a hype tip that only hangs around until the next hype track or whatever.

Anyways, this isn't such a question, but to discuss if anyone else is making stuff like this? Actual listenable albums with track sorta 'intervals' to blend them into one seamless play-through (just like the chemical brothers album, surrender, most of the tracks sorta morphs into the next etc...)

What do you guys have goin' on at the moment?

Right now I'm concentrating on my DJing as I just got a new CDJ to make a pair. I'm playing out tonight and my GF will play flute over some of the tracks that I will spin. We just moved into a new place and got situated in a dank studio space in the spare bedroom. Now that we got space to spread out we'll hopefully get some tracks going. I'm better at the production shiz and she's great at insturments so hopefully we'll get some synergy flowing. The thing is we're both strong willed so we clash occasionally. We've also got a friend that can spit so I guess we might start on some hiphop/rap stuff first. That's easier to do anyway IMHO.

Yeah one of our Dubliminal producers has been (and is) working on a full length 'actual listenable' album with interludes and stuff. Mostly dubstep music, but I know he's got plenty of tricks up his sleeve and the interludes are going to be very interesting.

The amount of work/dedication which goes in to making a properly 'listenable' (I think I know exactly what you mean by this) electronic/dance album is mad. I don't want to say it's harder than making a decent rock/reggae/pop album, but it might well be. Good luck with yours

Have you thought about what format/s you're going to release it on?

Working on a 4 track EP as a present for my GF - she's moved to Spain, I miss her like crazy, so want a CD of tunes to take over to her when I next visit.

I did this before too, with liquidish dnb a few years ago. Both as a gift and me trying to get her more into electronic music. Go all out and print out a cover and everything with tracklists, really helps make it more special, especially if you do some artwork to accompany it. I'm not with her any more but the tunes live on somewhere haha. It was actually pretty therapeutic and I learned quite a bit. It's a whole different process to just making random tunes... trying to keep a theme going, and have each song sound cohesive.

Also, in the Anyone make tunes on trains? thread I mentioned I was experimenting with making music out alone on a boat during the night. I've done this a few times since then, and they all sound quite similar so I guess something is naturally coming together. I'll be going out there again this weekend too. I haven't been lately because the water has been weird and I don't want it splashing all over the speakers and laptop.

I'm working on a 3-4 track EP. It'll be.. I guess "Nu-Disco" would be the genre. No samples, although I plan to give it a sampled "French touch" vibe, and vocals for each track, mostly talkbox'd.

Just fun, funky, sing-along, good time shit. Ain't enough of that kind of music these days.

While I love / prefer albums as an art...

I have gone off writing them for a bit. To me they are very personal... and from 2004-2008, I released 3 full-length albums plus a trilogy of 3 mini-albums... all in addition to a few EPs and single. And that doesn't even count the Twenty-four Breakbeats I did a little later. I still feel the need to refuel - as those 4 main albums really took a lot out of me.

So for now, I prefer writing EPs - more like a morsel rather than a volume.

That said, I might be compiling an album - but it is of my old band... so everything is already on tape. Once tracks are chosen, it would be more of a post-production project rather than writing from scratch.

writing a garage/2step one atm, still working on a dubstep lp, and also making a hip hop one that's going to be split into 2 eps
the hardest part for me is an lp for me should be something that the tracks all work together, but work individually as well and i get anal about what to put together

I plan on writing an album in a few years, I had the idea of making one while on holiday on the Isles of Scilly which is few islands 20miles off the the tip off cornwall. I loved all the sounds there and thought it would be cool to go over for a few weeks, record sounds and then come back and write an album using mainly just sounds from the islands. To me sounds are like photo's id much rather record a 5 minuite atmosphere than take a photo as sound says so much more to me.

wrote a whole petestrumentals like hip hop instrumental album in 2003 ahahah i was like 16. i remember my best move was to consider the old A side/B side paradigm that stipulates that your album should have a mood flip in the very middle and a longer silence between the songs.. like u were flippin the plate.

i still think that format is more then relevant for a mid length lp

No plans to make an album yet but when I do it's gotta be cohesive and not only that but a theme (most likely). Just make sure it sounds real good.

That didnt really cross my mind really. Ideally on cd, im not sure how a flowing track to track album will sit on vinyl. Mainly because there wont be any big breaks between tracks.
Suppose an ep on vinyl with a hand pick of the best is the norm.

Just finished a 'purple' hiphop crossover with a mate whos a hiphop producer. Love what we got down.

When I think of albums that flow together, all I think of is the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band album by The Beatles...
The way that album flows is incredible, definitely an album that was ahead of it's time!
I would love the idea of that coming into a different genre. Experimentation is always a good thing

Been working on a 4track EP..It's very weird..It has a 2step vibe, but is real heavy on atmosphere!
It's finished I just need it mastered, since I don't trust myself with that job anymore

I'm compiling a load of stuff I've been doing recently which has all been inspired by stuff like andoids dreaming of electric sheep, post pocalypse distorted synths etc,

just for fun though really cos i like working with a theme, dont think i'll show anyone lol

I`m all about producing different styles all the time.
I get inspiration from everywhere and it doesn`t always manifest itself in my work as dubstep.

working on a 4 track ep at the moment, each track being based around the concept of earth, wind, fire, water. dubstep influenced between 130 and 140 bpm, trying to keep it very rythmic and deep while giving each track a completely different tone per its concept.

Been thinking about making a three part concept album at some point, mostly about the concept of the day/night cycle. Not gonna start writing that album till I'm alot better at producing music, for now, I'll shall be working on new tracks in different genres to expand my production skills.
