moombahton basic drum arrangement?
I've been playing around with the moombahton sound a little bit but I can't seem to fully grasp the drums. Can anyone shed some light on some standard kick and snare placements?
Re: moombahton basic drum arrangement?
Off the top of my head, have you tried taking a short (16 bar-ish) loop of a Moombahton track you like, looping it in something like Audacity, then slowing it right down. Zoom in on the waveform (I recommend using the intro of a track for this), and you'll be able to see the different hits and hear them at a much slower tempo. Then simple try and recreate it in your DAW.
Alternatively, bearing in mind Moombahton is basically Dutch House down at about 108bpm (give or take a few tweaks, obv), then maybe a Dutch House programming tutorial on YouTube might be a good starting point;
You can then adapt it down to a slower BPM, and make any necessary changes. Apologies, video is FL specific.

Re: moombahton basic drum arrangement?
im afraid you aint made moombahton then, i dont care what it sounds like, even if it does sound like moombahton, it aint, cos you havent stuck to the strict rules of snare on 3 and 8!skyhigh wrote:I don't think I put my snare on 3 or 8, lol.

So it's just the ubiquitous latin groove?
Re: moombahton basic drum arrangement?

Fuck you Dave Nada
And how will you inquire into a thing when you are wholly ignorant of what it is? Even if you happen to bump right into it, how will you know it is the thing you didn't know?

If you want to know about how the drum rhythm is for Moombahton and the patterns, Listen to something like
Skrillex - Reptile OR Knife Party - Zoology.

Its actually snares on the offbeat, where you'd normally put the hi hat in house/techno/trance etc. The only difference I heard (I didnt really listen to too much I just listened to a couple tunes and ive heard a lot of reggaeton/Major Lazer), is that the first snare is swung right before the second kick. Heres what I got

and heres what it looks like

Now if i were to actually make a tuine like that, obviously i would use a different kick to get that house sound, but i hear a lot of that tight acoustic snare in the genre as it is, so i kept it with that

Re: moombahton basic drum arrangement?
only a matter of time before us white folks cannibalized all our club music and descended upon that of the latinos ;p
jk.. btw i like the groove in your track, seems that you have the general idea down. more syncopated percussion, imho, would do wonders

hell yeah i dont really even know what syncopated percussion is? ive researched it before but I guess i never really figured it out. any tips??
Re: moombahton basic drum arrangement?
For the bouncy kickpattern, I usually go with a long subkick on the 4ths, and some wellplaced, snappy kicks on the halfbeats.
Just my two cents:)
