CLOUD BOAT LIVE (UK, R&S)

http://soundcloud.com/r-srecords/cloud-boat-bastion

Having been hand-picked by both James Blake and Mount Kimbie for their tour supports, Cloud Boat are the latest signing to hit R&S. Their first EP featuring lead track, ‘Lions On The Beach’, blends together pop ideals with guitarist Sam Ricketts' Mogwai-esque riffs alongside vocalist Tom Clarke’s haunting voice pitched eerily low in the mix. Cut through with clever drum programming and heavy bass, they also reach a more emotive side, where their love of melody is juxtaposed with darker
sounds. There are moments of Godspeed You! Black Emperor, ticks of Vangelis and tocks of Radiohead, uniting to cement a sonic effect that bewilders, beguiles and mesmerises from the get go.
RAFFERTIE (UK, Ninja Tune)
http://soundcloud.com/raffertie

Benjamin Stefanski aka Raffertie has never been one to be tied down to any particular genre or scene. He has experimented with numerous styles, displaying the depth and sophistication of his production skill across releases for Planet Mu, Black Acre and Super for which he has received accolades from the likes of Simon Reynolds, Huw Stephens and Mary Anne Hobbs who first championed Raffertie on her BBC Radio 1 Experimental show in 2008.
Recognised both as an innovative producer and stand out DJ, the young talent has a reputation for performances filled with his typical dynamic energy that has seen him play across Europe; from Fabric to Space, Ibiza.
Graduating in 2010 with a degree in Classical Music Composition Raffertie spent the summer refining the next stage in his continuing stylistic progression. His new productions display newfound maturity whilst keeping the nuances and character that mark him out as a true individual.
Raffertie will release his debut artist album on Ninja Tune in early 2012. Probing and exploring the recesses of his soundworld like never before it will be a body of work that will expand the way we think about electronic music from then on.
In addition to the development of his own work, Raffertie founded his own Super imprint in 2010. Unconcerned by genres, scenes or any similar limitations, Super has released records with the kind of creative originality that has already become their trademark.
SLUGABED (UK, Ninja Tune)
http://soundcloud.com/slugabed

Blending influences both classic and contemporary, from the outermost reaches of dubstep, hip hop and beyond, Slugabed’s productions have been gaining props in a big way recently. Under his Slugabed alias, Greg Feldwick evokes the sound and spirit of post-Dilla west coast hip hop, whilst simultaneously stalking the length and breadth of the UK’s dubstep / bass music scene. Or in the words of The Quietus, crafting, “all the best bits of current American pop culture and distilling it along with UK bass music into a typically sceptical Brit attitude.”
Originally hailing from Bath, UK, the 21-year-old ‘beat machine’ relocated to Brighton, where he played an instrumental role in the success of local club night Donky Pitch for which he still holds a residency. The real noise, however, has emanated from Slugabed’s initial pool of 12-inches. 2009 saw the release of ‘Gritsalt’ for Ramp Recordings, as well as a heavy remake of Rick James’ ‘Superphreak’ for Stuff Records, with both demonstrating his ability to combine intelligent and original production skills with serious dancefloor appeal. Mary Anne Hobbs, Mark Pritchard, Benji B and Various Production were among the early converts, all vocalizing their admiration for the young producer.
With an already impressive catalogue of official remixes for the likes of Starkey, Eprom and Kelpe under his belt, he also created his own version of Pharoah Monch’s classic ‘Simon Says’ which has been devastating dancefloors worldwide. However, it was arguably his ‘Ultra Heat Treated’ EP, released in 2009 on the prestigious Planet Mu label, that propelled Slugabed furthest into the spotlight, winning him new support and glowing reviews across the board, as well as interest from some of the best cutting-edge record labels around. Partly as a result he was offered a chance to remix Roots Manuva’s all-time great 'Witness (1Hope)' for Ninja Tune’s twentieth anniversary boxset. The result was one of the stand-outs of that mammoth collection, Manuva himself liking it so much that he requested the instrumental so that he could use it in his live set. An album deal with the label followed shortly after.
Since then, things have really taken off for Feldwick. He has played at the legendary Berghain club in Berlin as part of Scuba’s SUB:STANCE night. He launched Donky Pitch’s record label with the track “Donky Stomp,” toured Canada and remixed both Eskmo and Stateless for his new home label. In addition, he’s planning a tour of Australia and New Zealand in April 2011, plus a summer appearance at the Outlook Festival and work to complete his debut album for Ninja.
PHAELEH (UK, Afterglo, Disfigured Dubz, Wheel & Deal)
http://soundcloud.com/phaeleh

In 2006, classically trained musician and electronic sound scientist Matt Preston was swept up in the wake of the Dubstep phenomenon. His diverse influences resulted in an equally diverse musical output, ranging from the euphoric heights of Nordic electronica through cinematic breakbeat to the depth charges of Dubstep.
Phaeleh’s unique sound has garnered support from the scene’s leading artists, including Skream, N-Type, Scuba, Distance, Kryptic Minds, Oris Jay, RSD and Jakes to name but a few, as well as radio support on BBC Radio 1, BBC Asian Network, BBC 6 Music and Kiss FM. This has helped Phaeleh to top the sales charts with releases on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz, N-Type’s Wheel & Deal Records and his own label Urban Scrumping Records. After the succes of the Cold In You EP Phaeleh is currently preparing for his Australasia tour to end an accomplished 2011 with great things planned for 2012.
