KICK DRUM PROCESSING PROBLEMS

Post by ShadyBrady6 » Sat Oct 08, 2011 1:16 am

I'm having some problems processing my kicks. I generally just eq my kick drums and use the VOL envelope to get where i usually need to be, however i'm trying to take it a littler ferther. One problem i usually come across is that as soon as i throw an eq on my kick drum channel and chop off the very low end of the kick, all of the sudden my kick gains about 4db in the mixer and im doing subtractive eq'ing?????? so basically i throw my eq on the kick, do a low cut, boost a few db at about 100hrz and all of the sudden my kick went from -10db to -3db, now i turn the kick channel back down to -10 and the kick actually sounds weaker than it did before i started. I dont know how to get my kicks to stop jumping so high in db when im doing a little eq'ing. I cant seem to get my kicks louder and punchier

kick will probably sound fine with all other track elements sitting relative to it...i'd expect some increase in higher frequencies when reducing lower frequencies but it does seem strange to have that level of increase unless it's some heavily compressed/distorted kick with a huge frequency range (in which case...tame the higher end a little see if that helps), cutting low end on certain elements will relieve some head room making room for other higher frequencies to have more presence...(test it on a bass heavy distorted synth...then high pass it slightly, 9 times out of 10, highs will have more presence and increase in db)

Yeah that's a pain in the ass (sometimes) phenomenon that I've seen discussed elsewhere on here and DOA. It's basically a phasing problem that occurs when freqs are cut causing a raise in others. More complex than this but try cutting by smaller amounts, or maybe using a second eq to tame those unwanted spikes.

Its deffo phasing.....dont know the explanation why. I use a linear phaze eq (waves) and this corrects the problem.
