I just got myself a pair of Dynaudio BM 5A monitors. The frequency response is from 50 Hz to 21kHz. They sound great and I couldn't be happier with them but I am wondering if I need to get a subwoofer to cover the really low end frequencies. How much substance is between 20Hz and 50 Hz? Does anyone use these monitors? Do you think getting a sub woofer be useful? Or would it be a complete waste of money? Any input would be helpful, I don't want to make a bad decision without weighing my options.

If you're room is properly treated so it can handle frequencies that low, then absolutely - there's magic happening down there, but if not it probably would do more harm than good.
If you want a sub for the "fun" of it, just get a cheap one like Tannoy, M-Audio or even Samson. Don't expect it to be a linear system though.
My advice (and something I keep meaning to do myself, damn me) is to get a boombox or home hifi kit with a typical drastic "smiley" frequency response and use it for reference. Compare your mixes to make sure they translate as desired. You'll catch runaway sub that drowns out the rest of the music pretty fast that way.

Word, thanks. My room is definitely not treated so it would probably be useless in my circumstances. The Boombox idea is a good one. I tend to use my car system for the same purpose.
Big ups on Atomic (man) by the way, that track is the bomb.

those are AMAZING. i don't think you'll gain much getting a sub w/ them, their low end presence is WICKED.

Hell yeah. I agree, they are fantastic. I love em and I got a great deal. I got two monitors, the full version of Ableton, some DVD's, some chords and Isolation pads for $1100 US with tax and everything...all brand new. It should have been 1100 for just the monitors.

We have a pair and they're very nice. As already stated, if your room is treated properly and your studio placement is cherried, you don't need a sub to get the most out of them. Also:

Yup. I try mine in the car, on generic MP3 player headphones, on computer speakers, etc. If you can get your mix sounding good on all of those devices, chances are it'll sound good anywhere. (Until a professional sound engineer has their way with it anyway!)
