interference on monitors??

Post by mmmsure » Thu Nov 10, 2011 10:44 am

I have this problem which usually occurs after extended use of my laptop set up with interface and monitors (Alesis io2 and KRKs) and a standard Microsoft optical mouse.. It seems to all go fine until ive been using them for a while then I get this terrible distortion whenever sound is coming out of the monitors.. Really annoying if Im working on something then have to swap to using the touchpad on my laptop as it hinders work flow..

Ive tried swapping USB ports around, restarting monitors + interface, reloading DAW (ableton) nothing seems to work..

Anyone had any similar problems or have any advice? Thanks!

deleted: didn't get the part about your mouse causing it.

Removing the mouse solves the distortion problem? Strange, what operating system are you using? Sounds a little like a conflicting IRQ issue.

Does the interference happen all the time while the mouse is plugged in or only when your moving it? I've seen a few people post online about getting ground loop noise when they move their mouse around. Could be an issue with the mouse wiring that's causing a ground loop with the audio interface. A ground loop will distort audio and create an audible hum even when there's no audio playing.

I get interference sometimes if my mobile is near my monitors, especially when receiving texts or data. I just have to move it away. I used to get it with a certain mouse too, it was a light sound every time the mouse moved. I had to switch USB ports to the ones in the rear because I had an interface also plugged in via USB next to the mouse. Try moving them as far away as you can, plug one on either side if you can. Since it's a laptop, there's not as many ports but you could always try to get a cheap USB hub as well. Might also want to try a USB>PS/2 adapter if your laptop has old PS/2 connectors still.

Sorry slow reply was away, but thanks for the feedback, when it starts interfering it does it all the time not just when the mouse is moving.. Have tried all combinations of USB ports, and Im running Windows Vista, may have to invest in a new mouse and hope that solves it!
