Post by rockerdude427 » Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:55 am

I really wanna learn, what can i use to mix live for under 1000 dollars.
I dont want it to become ridiculously expensive

reaktor, maybe some midicontrollers or maybe not. maybe an ipad or a lemur, or use ableton + apc/launchpad or some dj software or maybe some hardware synths/grooveboxes and some friends playing instruments.

you could also use a gameboy or kinect or a wiimote. you know, you can basically do anything. there's no set way of doing things. there are people performing with nothing but an analog mixer and some fx pedals.

Don't rush into buying gear, do a bit of research on the things suggested here and pick what you think suits you best, after all your the one controlling the set up so you want to make sure you know what you want from it.

this.
i bought a launchpad last year which was fucking disappointing, i should have known better but i didn't.
basically in almost every case nowadays the gear is doing NOTHING by itself, it's all just interfaces to control programs on your laptop. think of it like a joystick or gamepad.
start learning the programs, maybe get a midi keyboard with some knobs n faders to start with and then see how youre gonna take it live, everyone has different ideas and needs.

unless you're talking about dj'ing. then you can just buy some shiny controller, press sync and feel like the next guetta (at least thats how i feel like when im drunk and friends ask me to 'mix' shitty house for them)

well, the pads suck. theyre not velocity sensitive, just on/off switches really. the inbuilt fader functions like mixer etc are a joke, nice to play around with but definetly no substitute for real faders/knobs. the user functions might be interesting if you programm some shizzle with max for live but i prefer reaktor over max and reaper over live so yeah...

it's really just a remote for the clip matrix, if you want that buy the apc40 r apc20 instead, those things have real controls AND a clip matrix on them.
