Oh Dubstep, who really birthed you?

Post by abstractsound » Fri Dec 02, 2011 5:59 am

so the editor got it a bit twisted which spawned some hate comments.. this article does not serve as a comprehensive history of dubstep, or anything close. however it does serve as a commentary on the state of mainstream America's understanding of the sound.

"Back in 2007, all I knew was that this was music I had waited my entire life to hear, and when it punched me in the gut, I was hooked."

& Distance metal origins

cos was'nt none of that
but breakstep & dark garage
inspiring Skream to explore subspiration,

RSD to skank up in the hills,
Plasticman (apostate scum :) ) to slow & explore
Hatcha to archive the freshness in dubplates
HP to tell stories & DMZ to settle doubts

interesting. the article is not really covering anything new though.... one thing that interests me is that skrillex claims to not be classifying his work as dubstep (i didnt know that). i find that respectable, he is just making music that he wants to make.

dont quote me but i think i recall reading or hearing that dmz/digital mystikz and loefah never advertise or refer to any of their work or nights as dubstep either. i dont think the music that people making is the problem, but more the idea of false classification.

also i dont even know if there is any point in posting this because this sort of discussion has been done time and time again. :H:

Correct.

And yeah, great read indeed. Was about time that a journalist would stand up and correct the others. Although I doubt many of these Skrillex or Korn fans will read it (unfortunately).
