PS One / Playstation retro-thread

Post by joeki » Sun Dec 04, 2011 11:19 pm

I searched three or four terms and nothing came up, so sorry if this is a repost but I did all I could...
So this past weekend I was feeling nostalgic and I got out my old Playstation. That's right, I still have the old grey one and I bought it together with my cousin when it got released in Europe...and it's still working today ( a few more years and it will be 20 years old)!!!
It's still my number one console (together with the SNES). When PS2 arrived, my gaming days were already behind me and I only played on that one briefly. I did play on PC for a few more years (the regular games, Quake 3 ArenA, Counter-Strike, Unreal Tournament ). But I haven't played any games seriously at all in about the last 5 years or so. I'm completely out of touch and needless to say, Playstation One was were most of my fondest gaming memories are at.

I went through the old game Box (some games didn't work any more (scratches...) but I managed to compile a list of games that were essential for me. Thought I'd share and hope some of you old gamers could recommend me some titles I missed back in the day (barely had internet back then, so I'm sure I missed a few). Thinking I might nick a few of ebay this week. Here's my list !

Metal Gear Solid
Probably the best action title ever on PSOne. I liked Syphon Filter and Tenchu: Stealth Assasins as well. What MGS lacks in story lines, it makes up in gaming fun.

Final Fantasy VII
I think it could be the best game in its genre ever, my experience of it was quite emotional. I gave the ones after on PS2 a shot, but they never clicked with me. There was some limited competition in this category from Vagrant Story (which had an incredible interface later used a lot in PS2 games and even today!). And Also, Chrono Cross which is also one of the best PSone games.

Wipeout XL
Well there were three wipeouts and they all rocked, but I'll choose this one as best arcade racer. It was one of the first to incorporate fighting and power-ups whilst racing. More hoovercrafts, more tracks and more rave music on the soundtrack :) is what makes me choose XL over the first one. Those special effects in that game must have inspired some Dubstep producers haha. Destruction Derby 2 comes close as well, also with a good soundtrack!!

Tomb Raider II
Well, both TR 1, 2 and 3 are ace (the others are shit!), but I say 2 was the best in terms of story-line and atmosphere and also, in difficulty. The first and third one were too easy and this one was quite a challenge for me. Soul Reaver is another game in this category that was pretty awesome. But nothing touches Lara for me as far as adventure/puzzle go.

Resident Evil II
Again, all of the three first RE games were rock solid. But II just takes the cake: two story-lines. The best monsters and scariest moments...Nemesis was good because it had several potential endings but both 1 and 2 had better stories and were still original. Silent Hill will be many people's favourite here probably, I still don't agree (less creepiness but more action in RE).

Gran Turismo 2
Good racing simulators were so rare on PSOne. Formula 1 games sucked, Nascar sucked, hell even Colin McRae didn't get good until 2006. So this one was by far the best without any competition.

Oddworld : Abe's Odyssey
My favourite platform game. Funny, difficult, adult, great interface and graphics. I don't like platform games but this one was just awesome. Crash Bandicoot 3 and also, the less known Skullmonkeys were the only real competition.

So those are the ones I took out from under the dust. Any other games I need to fetch of ebay that I've forgotten about or didn't buy when they came out? Any other old PSone heads here?

MGS & GT2 are definetly two of the greatest games ever made.... spent most of my teenage years on those games alone haha

Syphon Filter was a bad boy game. The Mara Amarov boss level in the train tunnels was a bastard.

You've covered a few of the classics already.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 is one worth mentioning too
Tekken 3 is classic
Castlevania synphony of the night is the tits. Reasonably rare though
Suikoden II is one to get if you want an RPG. It's rare as fuck though.

Innit with the main character played by none other than Bob Mills of In Bed With MeDinner Fame.

Stand outs on the PS1 for me were
MGS (Obviously)
Bloody Roar
Crash Bandicoot Racer
Soul Reaver
Tenchu
Silent Hill
Gran Turismo
Resident Evil 2

I remember I got my first PS1 from winning a random raffle that I didn't even know about at school. A glorious day that was.

I remember playing tekken 2 and thinking how crazy graphics were getting.

We used to drool over shit like that ^

+1000 for xenogears! So disappointed I still haven't beat that game yet. My top 3 games: MGS, RE2, and Xenogears. Fucking epic story, developed & interesting characters, amazing soundtrack, totally unique combat system (why all RPGs didn't go that route i'll never know), and giant battling robots! what more you could ask, I don't know. Think i'm gonna try and finish it this weekend.

All the classics got mentioned. Some other fun games:

Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
:
Not an insanely polished game, even for its time. The mechanics were a bit rigid and whatever, but the RPG aspect was amazing. The first game I played with varying dialogue options, things like that. The environments and plot options were just on point.

Megaman Legends:
2 installments, turned the franchise into an incredible RPG. City environments, customizable weapons, epic dungeons and boss battles, etc. etc. Anyone claiming to be a megaman fan who hasn't beat either of these is a liar and a crook!

Misadventures of Tron Bonne: (Just googled this and it's $150 on ebay... holy crap)
Pure fun, prequel to the legends series. You take the role of tron bonne, that annoying bitch you're always fighting in the megaman games, and you oversee a crew of those yellow pirate people. You go on missions, some of which are different minigames, and you grow your crew and weapons etc. so it's got that element of RPG and strategy. Loads of humor.

Parasite Eve 2:
Survival horror in its most polished (imo) state. One of those games with that career element where you got back to home base and upgrade/customize etc. Great graphics for its time, and definitely creepy as fuck.

There were so many amazing games for the PS1 its unreal. Loads already mentioned that are great, but one thats worth mentioning again is Castlevania SoTN. Thats the best castlevania game ever. More games which I love and own-

Rayman
Brave Fencer Musashi
Vandal Hearts
Final Fantasy Tactics (arguably the best FF game ever made IMO)
Twisted Metal 2
Tobal No. 1 was awesome just because it was one of Squaresoft's launch games and came with a preview of FF7.

I have beaten some hard games in my time and rayman was not one of them. still to this day i never beat it, but those levels were so gorgeous and creative, it was worth posting here.
