Koan Sound/Kill The Noise HELPPPP

Post by kyletree » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:27 am

So, I've been working countless hours to get these two bass sounds, and I am completely stumped.

2:

For #1, I've been using massive with ohmicide and a saturator.
For #2, I've been speaking the words "talk to me" through a mic, through abletons vocoder with massive modulating it.

I've tried to learn FM8 multiple times, but I can't seem to get it. Can anyone tell me what I'm missing here?

Forgive me in advance if this is an amateurish question but what do you mean by modulating the sound using Massive? Do you mean taking audio and running it through Massive and using Massives filters / LFOs / FX to modulate the sound?

To my knowledge this isn't possible???

Go read up on reese basses. Trial and error from that point on.

by running it through massive, I mean that I have 2 tracks, one with massive and the other with my voice and a vocoder. I modulate the vocoder with massive

Experimenting after reading these topics should hopefully get you close to what you're looking for :D
Basically you want to get a nice reese going with a lot of phasing and a comb filter or two on it. Once you've done this your gonna want to get your lfo, bandpass is probably going to be the best to get a nice resonance. Split into different frequencies, should have 3 or 4 tracks. Lots of ohmicide needs to be used before and after the lfo to get the grittyness, if you were in logic I could tell you exactly what to use, but unfortunately i'm not aware of what alternatives you are given in ableton :/ nyways thats just a starter, read the topics!

Bah of course, using the vocoders input, i'm not sure why I didn't pick up on that....i thought you meant you were passing audio through Massive and modulating >_<

don't make a reese and process it into this, take a sample and using granular synthesis turn it INTO a reese.

they use malstrom.

What kind of sample would you recommend? Also, do you think I can get the same type of results using massive instead of reason/malstrom?

going to be hard to get that kinda sound from massive. read: hard as hell, not impossible. i would try to find a grain-table/granular synth. (camel alchemy, for example). then there's band-rejecting, more post-processing and loads and loads of distortion.

but any organic-sounding sample is great for this, water, animal noises, "throaty" type sounds, any noise with lots of harmonics.

i personally think these granular synthesis sounds are layered with bare reese's and noise - and processed again. but i'm still working on getting it super-clean, yet full.

Thor is good for this kind of stuff, also z3ta + or z3ta 2 if your on PC. Then theres Rapture which is from cakewalk as well.

edit: not sure how that triple post happened :/

Holy moly, that's pretty much exactly the sound, and the sound I've been chasing for the last month. Really awesome man. I would absolutely love some form of tutorial, or at least how you processed it to get that tone - it's been driving me nuts!! Is it some form of EQ mouth-imitating automation (what I've been trying..) or lots of notch/comb automation??

Surely he's not JUST using Malstrom, I'm interested in what you have after Malstrom. Is it the new Reason 6 distortion stuff or did you do postwork outside of Reason? It reminds me of the sound you get out of waveshaping.

Nevermind it's really really easy. Just use the Throat wavetable in Malstrom and modulate the index (with an envelope if you want or an LFO or whatever) and then you can sine shape it and comb filter it in Malstrom. Then you can do shit like use the Screamer thing to add overdrive or distortion or tube or tape or scream distortion or whatever you want, but not too much. And the vocoder in Reason you can also use that as an EQ to shape the sound more. Pretty simple surprisingly, the magic is all in the Throat wavetable. You could also use the other vocal ones just mess with the octave knobs to see how they sound, the Elektrik one for example sounds better in the higher octaves.

You can just start a new project, do these things, mess with the mod wheel changing whatever parameters like index or the shift or whatever and just bounce a bunch of automations over a bar or so to audio, chop them up for later and fuck with em in whatever sampler you choose.

Stupidly simple. It's funny that it's such a "well-kept secret" right now for how easy it is to get that exact sound.
