Gate in Ableton(I need some Help)

Post by dude2 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 6:35 pm

Ok so i get what the gate(Or gater, as i keep wanting to call it)is i just don't understand how to use it. I think the sidechaining is awesome. I know how to do that, but without sidechaining what does it do? Im pretty sure it kinda chops up a beat in a ryhtmic order, but i can't seem to get it to do that. Im using Ableton Live 8 so any help would be appreciated!

A gate generally lets audio above a set threshold go through. For example, if your threshold is -15, everything above that will be heard, and when the signal goes below -15 it will be cut off. You can also flip it the other way round.

The gate is just a reveresed limiter. It only allows audio with a higher gain than the threshold to pass through it. You can also use it as a reverse *compressor*, silencing audio below the threshold to a specific dB you can set adjusting the orange/white crossfader below the threshold meter.

I think he's talking about a trance gate, which is basically like a square LFO on the volume.
...in my opinion

So how do I go about getting a trance gate working in Ableton?

Well actually i already knew that part. I just want it to rhythmically stutter. Not necessarily sidechaining, but actually just a stutter. You know how to do that in Ableton? I just want it in part of my track. Like in a bassline have 6 notes and on the last note it stutters. You don't have to be too specific just the stutter.

Resample the last note as audio and cut it up/lay smaller notes into your synths midi? Gates arent going to like, repeat the audio...

Like the gating part in this (its kinda obvious in the waveform where i made it stutter) it was just a solid Noisy distorted bass note but i used abletons gate with a sidechaing from operator, and on the operator (which is "sends only" by the way so its not audible) i laid the "stutter" down in its piano roll as 16th notes. and on the gate i enables "flip". so whenever it detected the sidechain input from operators midi playing it cut the audio out from massive (which is where the distorted bass note came from)

First of all thanks for uploading that bassline. It was great. To be honest im lazy and found something close to what i wanted. If you go to:

Live Devices-->Audio Effects-->Audio Effect Rack-->Performance and DJ-->Tremmed Verb

And apply that it gives you the stutter effect, and then you can change the Term Amount to get a different chop. I think there are some others under that category with a bit more customization. Once again thanks for all your help, and that was a SICK bassline ;)

Ehm. You know, there's this really handy thing called, automating the volume. That's what i do if i want rhythmic stutters.

LFO's are for lazy people. Real men draw in their envelopes themselves, or work with gate triggered envelopes.

Make sure if automating volume in ableton, put a utility on said sound and automate the gain knob on that, so u can still have control over the sound as a whole with the volume slider.

Idk if Im gonna automate a whole thing. Maybe I'm not a real man, but that's better than automating it all....in my opinion. Thanks for the help guys.

this effect can be done with beat repeat.

Can you use the beat repeat to do a rapid drum? I mean like one that is at a steady beat and gets faster and faster until it sounds like one continuous sound. Like at a bass drop. Can it be used for that?
