Doing my first show, need lots of advice!

Post by DJChron169 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:22 am

So I'm like insanely nervous about my first show, its not even til February 10th, but I dont know what I will do.
Like, I have my music ready, but what do I do while I'm on stage? Just sit there and press play?
And what if they dont dance, or like my music? :/

Do you know how to Dj? If so, do that. I'm assuming that's what you're talking about anyways. Why would you even take the show if you didn't know what you were gonna do anyways?

Is this a DJ set or a Live set?

Either way, you should practice it every day so you know it inside and out. You don't want any surprises while you are up on stage like forgetting where your parts are or not knowing your music.

learn to dj quick. just like noisia, rusko, skream, benga and most real producers do out of necesity. you can use a laptop and ableton or traktor or all sorts of sfotware applications.

OR

you can burn your tracks to cd and use cdjs that they may have at the event? Doesnt ever hurt to have a bunch of other real tunes on you. NOt to be an asshole but ppl probably wont dance especially if your not doing anything entertaining like djing or dancing like skrill monkey boy.

My first few shows i just djed tunes i dug and wanted to share with ppl. Then i started to mix my own tunes into the sets. Ill probably always incorporate other tunes in my sets. Ill just start doing live remix/composing with ableton.

Right now i just have a dj template in ableton and do my best to select some interesting and straight up banging dj sets using an anolog mixer for fading and nice eq knobs.

I don't know the first thing about performing live, (I've only DJed live once and it wasnt even really cuz it was just at my friends party and I knew 80% of the people there) but just out of basic curiosity, what show is this, how did you get booked for it, and how many people are going to show up?

I dont have a turntable, and I dont know how to DJ (reffering to disk jockeying?) Someone heard my music and wanted me to play it at a youth conference to end the night off. Its going to be about 300 people they said, nothing big.
They said just bring your laptop and keyboard and play some music, and my friend Garrett is a light technician and will be doing the lights with the show.
I'm so scared this is going to be bad.

stop worrying.

Grab a free dj software, maybe virtualdj (its not a serious software but for your one night-i-have-no=idea=WTF-im-doing-show it will be sufficient).

Drop your tunes into the software and go to town. Practice mixing tracks into each other, playing with effects or whatever other nonsense is in that program.

Just apply yourself OR realize you wrote a check your ass cant bounce. No need to fret about it. Theres plenty of time lol

Man, I used a fucking $1 app on my iPod touch called djay to DJ, i know this sounds dumb, but it's incredibly awesome all things considered. Besides a sample deck, I challenge someone on here to name one thing it cant do that a normal decent dj machine can do.

Anyways I performed with that and wowed my friends, granted, they're not exactly dj magazine critics, but it worked is what I'm saying

if you were to buy some equipment now you could easily learn the basics by then. i'm not sure if that's something you wanna do but if people are gonna keep asking you to play then it'd be worth it.

If you don't have the cash to drop on a DJing software, Mixxx is freeware and decent. Hope everything goes smoothly, man.
...in my opinion
