Illegally Downloading Music

Post by Duffman » Mon Jan 02, 2012 10:34 pm

You all seem like saints on here when it comes to obtaining music legally, but do any of you illegally download? Or I suppose the real question is will any of you admit to it? It's actually pretty interesting how there is such a contrast in opinions on illegal downloading music on this forum compared to other music forums. An overwhelming majority of users on the other forums openly admit to illegally downloading music, whereas here people are shunned upon for illegally downloading music. Same with illegally downloading production software as well.

I used to illegally download something serious, but I haven't been in recent years. It's crippling me now though, being broke and knowing all these lovely new albums are literally a fingertip away is oh so tempting, but nah I won't be, I have some self-control...maybe

So yeah, discuss I suppose.....

I buy everything that I intend to play out, and as much as I can for personal listening.

I try to support specific artists that, I guess, look like they need more support than some of these mainstream artists. However, I'm 15 and although I am looking for a job, alas I have not found one yet. That means I have to illegally and oh so shamefully download music. :(

I just don't have the funds, although I hope I can get a turntable to play music and then I would be buying the vinyl.

if were talking about 'our' sorta music, then nah. ill always wait and buy it properly. wouldnt ever bootleg a release unless its main/bait pop shit.

i did it in high school, then i stopped
but i'll get off my high horse to tell an interesting tale... i do have possession of one album that i admittedly cracked, because strangely i couldn't find it anywhere else, and used to own it on cassette only.. which got destroyed by a flood

It is the only material that crashes iTunes when i attempt to burn it to disc. does iTunes know..??

Hadn't seen the topic come up in the hideout since I've been here, and I am genuinely interested. I suppose topics like these are always going to pop up once in a while.

Seems like I drop around $200 on records every time Im in San Francisco which is every other month.
But I've got a CDJ to play what I can't get or don't have yet on wax, so I do download from some choice blogs.
I just wish the forum was a little more lax about uploading music, I've got a whole heap of awesome tunes that are now OOP and I'd love to share them here, but NO PIRATES ALLOWED on DSF.

I wonder if there is a secret forum where the HEADS share tunes??? -e-

I never download stuff illegally. Find that I value the music less and don't bother listening to it very much. In fact that's one of the main reasons why I still buy a lot of vinyl rather than go digital, I love owning records and will listen to them endlessly compared to stuff I've been sent or bought digitally. Plus I like to support the producers, artists, labels or whatever as I think they deserve it and want them to continue doing the same.

I will download stuff I deem impossible to find (things like Brazilian rock from the 60s is something I have a big folder of for example) but I try buy everything else.

I used to pirate music software a lot when I was learning as I just couldn't afford it but wanted to start producing music. Don't really download anymore really and anyone who makes money from music shouldn't be pirating software. You're making money from using a product someone made for you. Should really be paying them for that (if they're selling it and not giving it away free that is)

I used to be an uploader and downloader back in the day when I was an admin on puregrime. I was like 14 at the time though. I still did buy stuff in those days on vinyl, CD and digital download.

I've had a change of heart and never pirate these days, but i also don't buy digital formats. the only files in my itunes are DJ sets, free downloads and old episodes of the Radio 4 program Just a Minute.

I haven't downloaded anything illegally for about 2 years (except films ofcourse), not out of some moral high ground bullshit, I'm just too lazy to organise my music folder again. I survive off youtube, buying records, mixes and the obscene amount of free mixtapes that have been given out this year.

All for paying for your downloads but I definitely had some bad experiences with it too.

- When you buy an album directly from Soma rec. you have to download each song individually.
- File names are quite ridiculous from time to time, weird codes and almost always the bitrate.

if I have something that ive already got on wax but I want on my iPod, I have no qualms in torrenting it

downloads should be standard with all vinyl purchases anyway

I'm not going to come up with excuses or ethics, I download a lot illegally, probably too much. It's too easy.
