SEAMS LIVE (DE, Pictures Music)
http://soundcloud.com/seams
Touring with Gold Panda and Dam Mantle whilst selling out a run of “Nightcycles” pressed by Tough Love set Seams off to a very strong start. Having already released a free album and attracted hundreds of followers this represented the next step. Always a musician, James Welch went through school playing guitar in bands, often taking the role of producer. Starting out on four track tape he moved onto Logic then Ableton Live and most recently stepped back to tape incorporating a cassette dictaphone into his production setup.
Most electronic music fans will recognise in Seams’ organic sound a reference to traditional songwriting and structure. I’m sure for a new generation of listeners Seams will be the gateway drug to electronica for those kids that grew up listening to guitar music. Seams also invokes a fascination in his followers through his use of unpretentious concepts. His release on Pictures Music “Tourist” documents a summer spent living in Berlin with a laptop and a Dictaphone. The four tracks guide you sonically through Berlin’s different atmospheres with field recordings chopped and looped over subtle synth and drum work. Look out for the limited edition cassette tape which will be available at the next few Seams dates. Context is important in his music. ”Nightcycles” was composed around sounds from midnight bike rides.
“As I don’t write songs with words, recreating moods and experiences is much more what I’m about I guess. There is still a meaning behind the music, it’s just slightly less literal. When people told me they listened to “Nightcycles” when riding their bikes at night, that totally was a win for me.”
Seams has a wonderful presence online, he prides himself on being an early adopter and embracer of new ideas and technologies. Self released “A Juvenile Rush” was bartered in return for email addresses and a quick internet search reveals a flow of information and chit chat between friends, virtual or other wise he has met along the way.
“To me it’s essential these days to have a relationship with people who listen to your music, it’s not a one way thing. Especially when making music where there isn’t a local scene. The internet has really enabled a niche and community to develop. Getting feedback on mixes through soundcloud was a big thing for me, and getting involved in other peoples discussions about music, industry and tech, makes it about more than just the tunes, it’s an entire ecosystem of lovely linked things”.
CLUBROOT (UK, Lo Dubs)
http://soundcloud.com/clubroot
Comparisons to Burial with more of a dance floor edge, Clubroot manages to emerge as a credible producer, able to evoke emotion in the music and create movement on the dance floor.
25 year old Dan Richmond first immerged into the Dubstep scene mid 2009 with his debut self-titled Album - Clubroot. Having enjoyed a healthy Drum and Bass scene in his early teens, alongside a liking of UK Garage, House and Trance, a local Music Technology course was the logical progression for the aspiring bedroom DJ. After discovering that the music he loved could be produced in such simple home studios, Clubroot went on to University to study Music Production for 3 years.
It was during his time at University that Clubroot discovered the sounds of Dubstep, via Mary Anne Hobbs Dubstep Warz Show in 2006. Taking an immediate liking to the work of Vex’d, Skream and Loefah, tastes soon progressed towards the deeper side of the scene with the ore inspiring début album releases of Distance and Burial.
Things began moving forward after interest was shown in Clubroots un-official album ‘Embryo’, which was created as a final year project for University. Having been inspired by a number of artists and electronic genres, a brooding organic ambient sound was developing, which showed emotion and musicality, drawing inspiration from his love of early Dark Techy D&B, 2 Step beats, Film Scores and Ambient Electronica. It was the Portland, Oregon based LoDubs label that first took notice of such an exciting artist, and around mid 2008 an official release was due the following year. In 2009 Clubroot was also voted for as the best new producers and best album in the Dubstepforum Awards.
During the build up to the Albums release, Mary Anne Hobbs commissioned an Album showcase mix for her Experimental Show, shortly followed by a mix for Rob Booths Electronic Exploration show. It was clear that people were beginning to take notice, with acclaim and recognition from a number of reviewers and critics, including glowing reviews from Pitchfork and Bigup Magazine, amongst others.
With his 2nd Album released in May receiving the same huge praises, Clubroot had cemented himself as a big player in the scene and a producer and DJ in top demand. With new releases and a third album on the way, as well as plenty of collaborations in the pipe line, Clubroot is continuing to make a big impact and shows no sign of slowing down.
BUNZER0 (BE, Stainage, Orientis, Sub.fm, Je m'en fish, ...)
http://bunzer0.blogspot.com/
Bun-Zer0 has been DJing both in his native Belgium for over 15 years, and most recently internationally including recent performances at the legendary night FWD>> in London, as well as a three hour set in the USA.
His interest in dubstep began after hearing early music from Horsepower Productions. In 2006, to spread his enthusiasm for this emerging sound, Bun began promoting nights at the Beursschouwburg, with a wide array of UK pioneers, including Skream, Youngsta, Loefah and Mark One.
He also promoted some other nights with N-Type, Walsh and Dj Pinch as guests. As a DJ, Bun-Zer0 has supported many of the scene’s top artists, and is one of the best known dubstep DJs outside of the UK.
He hosts an award winning weekly show on the first dubstep radio station, Sub.fm, with an audience of hundreds. It’s no surprise Bun’s show has a huge following, as he expertly blends fresh tunes from both the scene’s big hitters, as well as unknown up and comers. Also, the accompaniment of harmonica player Mr Jo gives Bun’s show a unique touch. Bun has also been writing for the music magazine Rif Raf for over 10 years, as well as compiling the CD ‘SubStance’ from Aecletrik Records, which showcased the now diverse & international sound of dubstep. With further international bookings as well as exciting lineups at his own nights, 2008 was set to see Bun-Zer0 cement his reputation as one of the scene’s best-loved and most well-respected DJs. 2010 and 2011 saw a culmination of all this hard work with spots at Dour Festival, Tomorrowland, and Croatia's infamous Outlook festival, as well as spots on the most respected stages in Belgium. Once again, Bunzer0 also was invited to FWD and Bristol's Dubloaded in December 2011.
