Looking for Advice on DJing Sound Rig

Post by counterparty » Wed Jan 25, 2012 3:44 am

Hey guys-

So I've taken a look through the forum, but I don't think there has necessarily been a question as specific as mine in terms of "what do I buy?" So basically, I've been getting really into producing over the past year (praise be to this forum, you guys rock!)... and now I want to start to learn how to DJ so I can potentially play some of my stuff out soon. I just bought a Traktor S4 on the assumption that I could just work off my monitor headphones, but I think that I really want to have some kind of speakers to play out tunes in my apartment as well. Basically, I will either be using them to listen to myself (for practice) while I cue things up in my headphones, or to do a very basic setup for a few friends just having fun and listening to good music while I mix.

I always produce on headphones, so I don't need the best setup for professional sound, but can someone provide any suggestions on what I should get? I was thinking maybe just 1 monitor speaker, or potentially all the way up to two monitors and a sub. I really don't want to spend much money on this, so I'm asking for suggestions on high-quality low-budget equipment that could provide for some good sound in a small apartment. In terms of budget I am thinking ~$200-300ish, but could do more or less depending on how much of a difference it makes.

Thanks for your help!

2 moniters and a sub is always a good option, as you can hear the panning and such. Test a few out and see what system sounds best to you, if it's an option. KRKs are pretty popular, and i think they fall close to your budget.

I run a pair of Mackie SRM450s in my studio as monitors, but i bought them instead of near field monitors so that i can throw down small gigs with out having to rent gear. They have worked very well for what i wanted.

mixer - dont get anything else other then a allen and heath ....built strong and last long, have a 62, had it for 6+ years now, still no issues, AT ALL, have had it out in the club, as well as house parties, thing does not redline (well it does, obviously, but not easy to do AT ALL, youll go def before it redlines) but oddly the 92 redlines way easier, I dont know what the difference is between the two, but Id suggest the 62 to anyone that is looking for quality, pioneers, ha, Ive never seen one that didnt have issues lol...and really, "oh it has FX and all this other stuff tho" yeah, ok, go buy it and lets se how often you use them? prolly not often if at all...also the smaller 2 channel by allen and heath is good too...

Thanks a LOT for the help guys... I had no idea where to even start and you all gave me some great leads. I ended up going with a single KRK Rokit 6, based on some really nice reviews and I am really enjoying my decision. My thought is that I don't need something amazing, but since I don't have a sub I need something with a frequency range that can at least get me close. I'm thinking once I get a bigger apartment I will upgrade to two monitors, but right now I honestly don't care about missing out panning because I have nice studio monitor headphones that I can use for that.
