making tunes really fast
does anybody else here just kind of crank them out?? i mix as i go and my shit doesn't sound perfect but it sounds acceptable, and it usually takes me less than 4 hrs total to finish a tune. i just see the one-tune-a-week challenge thread and i don't get it i guess, i could easily have 5 tunes in a week. does this mean my tunes are suffering in quality or detail you think?? does it mean i just have more spare time than most people??
the only friends i have that also work this way are DJs, btw

well, having listened to your song in your sig. I could see that, I'm not saying it's bad but it could definitely use more thought on the arrangement. maybe spend a little more time polishing the tracks?

Re: making tunes really fast
something that make a good track into a great track are the intricacies.
evolving atmos, constantly twisting basssounds, one off edits, not rinsing the same fills etc.
that's not possible in a start-to-finish four-hour session imo.

It's great you have ideas and can empty them by creating music.
That being said, it's not about quantity..it's about quality!

Re: making tunes really fast
i spent 4hrs out of the 8 hrs i did doing music yesterday just looking at the 3rd and final visit to my mixdown of a track along with polishing a few edits to the drums and percussion / arrangement
the other 4hrs was going through jazz records for samples for my next track ( drums only at the moment ) switching between sampling and then seeing if the new samples work with new beat.
going through my hard drive for sounds, checking out new samples that ive recorded off sky.
bit of food inbetween
if you can complete a whole track in 4hrs from collecting sounds and samples to mixing it down and making closure on the track then fair play to you.
i know some of the pro's do it as they have templates with beats already loaded and everything almost good to go ( hence a lot of their tunes / drums sounding simular ) i remember chase & status banged out 3 tunes in 24hrs with a record label suite breathing down their necks. its doable under the right conditions, planning and when you have your work flow and time management down.
im well off that mark... not sure im bothered about being that quick.

i spend like 20 mins to about 3 or 4 hours.. on just ONE sound
my songs take 40-50 hours since i want every part to be the best i can get it.

Re: making tunes really fast
It all depends on the amount of processing you put into a tune.My tracks that take the most time involve 25+tracks all with plugins, sometimes i start my sound design from scratch and search through my banks for drums which itself can be a very time consuming effort. If i had all my ideas ready from start off i could probably bang tunes out like they are going out of fashion but picking sounds and choosing techniques i'm going to use for me is the most important part of starting a tune and thats all before i think about the arrangement and how i'm gonna keep the listener interested.
Re: making tunes really fast
Its dependant on alot of things, floating points is one of the only top producers i know of that doesn't spend much time on his music and comes out with quality , on the other hand he's probably the most musically trained, same with burial, he took 2 weeks to make his untrue album, but went to music school.
to my knowledge 95% of us get the main ideas down in 4/5 hours, but spend much longer trying to add the subtleties and mixing

Re: making tunes really fast
Addison Groove (Headhunter) said that he writes his tunes for 4-5 hours and if he can't finish them in that time, he most probably won't go back to them.
Re: making tunes really fast
If you are comfortable with your workflow and like the tunes you are producing.. then there is nothing to worry about! I make most my tracks in 1-3 days, I am just looking for a groove and a nice atmosphere something that will take you away, not specifically looking for oh I need this sound now and that etc.
Also I like that tune in your sig OP,maybe spend a little bit more time on small variations but I like the groove!

Re: making tunes really fast
I can vary between tunes.. sometimes I can get the main core of the tune done in a couple of hours, and then spend a little longer doing more intricate things.
Sometimes everything just comes together and It will be done in 3-4 hours, a lot of the time I start 3-4 different tracks at once and work on one when I get bored of the other

mr mitch. So stoked I just listed to your sig and then every track on your sound cloud. Big tunes! Love it
Re: making tunes really fast
i guess it really also depends on whether youre preparing tracks for a pro release or if you're just putting together a version for a gig or something to bang out
i might try switching up my workflow to see how my tunes sound when i work on them for like several days. i always want to put something special on a tune that takes it to the next level so this might be an interesting experiment

Re: making tunes really fast
i also don't really mind using presets for a lot of basic sounds as long as i twist them up a little tiny bit so that could have something to do with it, altho i make a lot of patches from scratch too
Re: making tunes really fast
Tunes take a long time to make for me haha, can never bang one out in a few hours!
Re: making tunes really fast
iv spent 4 hours on one sound before and so do top producers. many top producers say they spend months on a track. and I'm sure they take breaks during the period but I'm sure they also work on it a good bit each week. definitely spend more time on tracks. if you have that many ideas and workflow that is good you can crank tunes out but maybe be more selective on your arrangement. save different copies of different arrangements you have come up with. then spend more time fine tuning each sound and the mix as a whole.
and yeah tunes would at least take me a week straight working on it quite often. but usually I'm so busy i can't work on them that often so they take me longer.

Re: making tunes really fast
I usual finish a song in 3-4 hours. That is because I just lay out my notes in a piano roll. All the notes are there and all the drum "hits" are there. Then it takes me maybe 30+ hours actually making the bass sound, pads, adding effects, manipulating percussion sounds etc. But the song is "done" in usually 3-4 hours. It just isn't complete. I have maybe 20 projects where I have the notes and some simple percussion and bass sounds. I never have the time to finish them though.
That is just my opinion. I look as done and complete as 2 different things.
Done is where everything is arranged. Everything is literally there. Think of it like a rough copy of a novel/story.
A completed story has been edited, maybe pictures added to make it more interesting and maybe some fonts are made bigger to add emphasis.
That is just my mindset, but then again I do try to make music that emulates a story. Long story short, the songs are arranged in 3-4 hours and the fine details and "extra" stuff take about 30+ hours.

Re: making tunes really fast
the amount of time you spend on a tune has nothing to do with how good or bad it will be. TeeBee used to talk about how he spent 3 months on a tune... I just hear that and consider it bad time management.
