KRK Rokit 5

Hey everyone.

I just got the KRK Rokit 5's, but im not really convinced of the sound coming out from them.
They sound really good in the mid and high frequenze, but the bass is not as easy to hear.

I was wondering if this may depend on my room, that its not "soundproofed(?)", or if the speakers is just not made for House/Dubstep productions.


Please respond! Should i go for a bigger size or should i try soundproof my room?

You will need a sub (krk 10s if you want the specific one) to hear the low frequencies properly! The speakers are made for any genre of music, but since they are the smallest ones, the bass response is just not enough to mix on them.. either you buy a sub, or mix with headphones, its up to you and your wallet! Or you can sell your 5's and buy some bigger VXTs..

Better to treat your room instead of buying a sub.
A sub in a untreated room will just sound boomy and the sound will bounce everywhere and you won't get a true representation of the low Frequency

Nah i know, i got a sub, but as you say, i cant mix my tracks with it, cuz i don't get that clean low end out of it. You think it will be better if i treat my room correctly?

Treating is always a good idea, but the rokit 5 is just not able to create low frequency sounds.. treat your room AND buy the sub when u got the paper for it.. I myself have a pair of rokit 6 and I'll also gonna get the 10s soon, but first I treat my room as well!

the reason you dont hear the bass is because of bass traps, and the krk 5's dont go that low (50 hz if i recall)

and besides when monitoring the bass will never be really loud (boosted)

I don't think so.. to accurately mix u need headphones with both of those, or their desired sub. Since we make bass heavy music a sub should be essential even for listening. If you don't have the budget just get a decent pair of headphones to do the mixdown, that's what I'm doing at the moment.

This has to be a funny. Are you saying he needs to install bass traps, to get his monitors to produce more bass.
Or that his room somehow naturally traps bass.
50 hz is crazy low btw, although some monitor speclists say they go lower you won't need it. I don't know of any monitor
that can handle such low freq at a high enough level.

The performance of a sub is 100% depended on the room, either you have to know exactly what the room does
to the sound or you'll have to put a few thousand quid towards bass management / room treatment

I don't actually do any of these things though, I produce on headphones... than test it on a few different systems. When I'm happy
with the tune I'll just take it to a studio. That way I'm sure it'll be a decent mixdown.

Why don't you save yourself loads of money and just do your subs in headphones/using a freq analyzer like most people? No point making insane expenditures when with a bit of practice you can learn a cheaper but just as good work flow.

Just use a spectrum analyzer. I have the 5's as well, and that's what I do.

I think he's saying there are probably places in his room that naturally trap sub frequencies. To the OP: another cost effective yet possibly beneficial solution is try positioning your speakers in different places, as well as, finding a type of material which you can use as makeshift desktop pads, assuming you don't have stands. Do everything you can to maximize the yield of the gear you have before you decide to upgrade the size of your monitors.

i second any comments about treating your room before you get a sub.. i have the krk 5's and yea the low end isnt great by any means.. but honestly 9 times out of 10 your going to overdue it if you have a physical sub.. I would focus primarily mixing your sub with a nice pair of monitor headphones anyways..

Since most subbasses are pretty simple waveforms, then a frequency analyser would tell you a lot of what you need to know, as said...

Those monitors go down to 56Hz or so, so about A on the first octave.

I know that the producer and the monitors need to be in a "triangle".
but where to place the sub ?

5 inch drivers maybe too small for earth shaking bass depending on the size of your room. But also remember Studio monitors are designed to sound flat and not very bassy.
