So... I got booked to play a wedding

Post by drokkr » Tue Feb 28, 2012 1:07 pm

Help!

I played their engagement party in a club here. Played some house bits ads some 808 stuff. That was fine it was a club and bar the folks of the couple it was their mates. Now they want me for the wedding in April but it's in a 5 star hotel and I'm on after the band from 12 - 2am...

I need some wedding music asap. What gets played at weddings?

EDIT - The money is nuts :corndance:

Watch the Wedding singer if you need tips.
Maybe break out in tears and bitch about your missus over the mic as well.

That or just stick to the 808, house, deep house, some techno, etc.
Keep it light and vibey, nothing too dark.
Unless they want dungeon??

indeed, it was merely an attempt at humor.

Anyways, as you're following the band i guess you wont have to worry about first dance business, so play stuff similar to what they enjoyed on the engagement night? or just ask them if they have any requests and work around that?

Get yourself the following;

ABBA Gold
Grease Soundtrack
Rock Legends/Rock Anthems/Kings Of Rock style compilation
Motown Collection
The last 4 Now albums or equivalent
60s/70s/80s collections

That should pretty much cover all generic bases. Then it's a matter of tailoring it specifically to the bride/groom. If they're former indie kids or whatever, get a copy of Best Student Anthems In The World ever (or equivalent, something with Stones Roses et al on it); if they're ravers, maybe some diet tracks from their preferred genre, their first dance track etc etc.

Stick with vocal tracks whereever possible, smile nicely at everyone, always play at least one Kylie Minogue track and make sure you have a pen & paper with you to write down requests.

Keep a good supply of Motown just in case you start to lose the dancefloor.. everyone likes Motown. Try and avoid Come on Eileen!

Weddings are all about maintaining dignity whilst trying to satisfy the broadest range of tastes possible... good luck!

Why not ask them whether they want you to play the stuff you played before? I would've thought that's why they booked you?

They want me to do 30-45 minutes of regular wedding stuff... time to chase them up on what they are really looking for in that stuff I think
