Re: Aspartame
Last study I read said it wasn't as bad as they originally thought. Not really a big soda
fan anyway.
Big hit at the shop I work at: Stevia. It's natural and even sweeter than aspartame. Quite expensive though.

I have a terrible alergy to aspartame, my throat swelled once when I was a kid I couldn't breath. I'm also alergic to phenylalanine.

I try to stay away from it as much as I can, seems pretty hard to do though, it's in a lot of shit.

Re: Aspartame
It's actually anti-biotic and can change gut flora so you're most likely going to get fat even if it's not from the calories of sugar. I did read some preliminary research that suggested that because it tastes 'sweet' it actually causes the body to uptake a an amount of calories proportional to the perceived glucose being ingested therefore negating any benefit from being less calorific itself - don't know if that got followed up though.
Stevia is pretty cool though it's banned in the EU for some strange reason.
I make my own soda with water kefir anyway, just add sugar (I use molasses for the health benefits) and leave it to ferment for a few days - an alcoholic, fizzy, probiotic drink that costs fuck all!

Stevia is not banned in the EU. A few days ago I bought some Stevia cubes in the shop.

Ahh, must be unstandardised products then, you definitely can't buy the leaf in an unprocessed form.NilsFG wrote:Stevia is not banned in the EU. A few days ago I bought some Stevia cubes in the shop.

It was made legal last December. Don't know about the plant itself but you can buy it in powder form now.test recordings wrote:Ahh, must be unstandardised products then, you definitely can't buy the leaf in an unprocessed form.NilsFG wrote:Stevia is not banned in the EU. Before we weren't allowed to sell it as a sweetener. Now it's flying out the door.
