Best monitoring phones?
Hi guys, for the past few months I've been making music on my laptop using Reason, I've been having difficulty mixing my tunes though because I'm skint as hell and I'm using a crappy set of speakers! I've decided to sell my guitar amplifier so I can bolster my computer music gear; my budget is £200 to get some monitoring phones and an audio interface. I know proper monitor speakers are preferable but the walls in the house are paper thin and I don't want the neighbours complaining when I'm up at stupid oclock making dubstep and jungle and whatnot, for under £200 I would rather have a decent set of phones just to keep things portable - what recommendations would you give for this budget?

"HD 600 ~ £180
Pro's: Sound like sex. Comfortable, Frequency range is amazing goes all the way from 20-2000 Hz (and made my ears bleed at 15,000Hz !)
Con's: Expensive at around £180
HD 600 crew - get the HD650 cable, makes a very nice difference for only £20 or so"

Re: Best monitoring phones?
I`m a Beyerdynamics fan since I got My Dt990
I got mine for $185 or so.
You will require a headphone amp though.
I went the Cmoy BB Route, another $60 or so.
Beyerdynamic
DT990 PRO ~185$
Pros: comfortable, very solid bass response, wide frequency range, open backed.
Cons: can`t find any

Sony MDR-7506 are sort of the industry standard.
Re: Best monitoring phones?
A&H xd-40 sounds nice and flat to me, definitely no bass emphasis compared to my previous AKG's.

I have DT770's. Love em.
I also listened to DT990s, but i felt 770s had better bass response (because they're closed backed.)
On your budget, I'd recommend splurging on good headphones and getting a cheap headphone amp if ur not planning on deviating from ITB soon, so I'd spend around 150 of ur budget on the 770s and then the rest on a headphone amp.

Re: Best monitoring phones?
Im considering the AKG k240s as my first "real" headphones purchase... ill continue to use in ears for live stuff (i just like in ears lol) but i want a decent ref. monitor headphone option to check mixes and late night produciton tasks.
I have a numark mixer which will power these fine, just wondering what the experience is when these are used directly from a MBP 3.5mm Stereo Jack Output? Primarily i will not be running them like this just hoping someone has a MBP and the headphones... would appreciate there input/feedback.

Which one should I go for, the 80 or 250ohm model? Ideally I'd like to use them with my ipod but the priority is monitoring music on the laptop.squiggles wrote:I have DT770's. Love em.

I wouldn`t say the 770 has more bass than the 990.squiggles wrote:I have DT770's. Love em.

The 990 bass is pretty great.

Think it was no more than £100 (going back a few years) They were second hand but when they arrived they were in the original box and looked like they had never been worn/used at all....result!dididub wrote:How cheapVolatile Psycle wrote:I got the 7509's in nearly new condition off ebay well cheapSonika wrote:Sony MDR-7506 are sort of the industry standard.![]()
